Alta Orsa is not a tasting room you happen to visit. It is a mountain farm where wine is made.
High above Hopland in Mendocino County, a winding road leads to our 160-acre estate, where Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah have grown since the late 1980s. Ricardo, our vineyard manager, has farmed these same vines since 1999. More than 25 years of knowing the land, the vines, the seasons, and what they need.
There is no polished tasting room here. Instead, we pour wine beneath an old cork tree, with the vineyard falling away toward the valley below. You might hear the sheep moving through the vines, see goats working the hillsides, or catch the scent of fermentation drifting up from the cellar. This is a working estate, and guests experience it as it is.
We farm organically and regeneratively, with livestock integrated into the vineyard and a constant focus on building living soils, biodiversity, and a healthier ecosystem. Our wines begin with that place: small lots of estate Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, alongside Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from family-owned vineyards we know and trust in Mendocino and Sonoma.
Our Cabernet Sauvignon was selected as a finalist in The 1976 Redo, a blind tasting honoring the legacy of the original Judgment of Paris.
Come up the mountain, sit beneath the cork tree, walk the vines, taste the wines, and stay awhile.
At Alta Orsa, we believe the most compelling wines don't just taste like a vineyard. They taste like a whole living place.
