Cantine del Notaio: A Gem in the Heart of Basilicata

Cantine del Notaio is situated in the picturesque region of Basilicata, surrounded by lush forests and majestic mountains in southern Italy. Spanning 40 hectares across the Vulture area, this winery is renowned for producing a variety of award-winning wines. The Giuratrabocchetti family has a long-standing winemaking tradition that has been passed down through generations. Established in 1998 by Gerardo, an Agricultural Sciences graduate, the winery is now managed by him and his wife, Marcella, who continue to honor their family legacy. Notably, Luigi Moio, a respected professor of Oenology at the University of Naples, collaborates with Gerardo to enhance the wine production process, resulting in exceptional flavors.

Exceptional Wines and Olive Oil

The Cantine del Notaio vineyard, known as Casana, is located in the Maschito province. Some of the vines date back to 1960, while others were planted in 2003. Gerardo cultivates a diverse range of grapes, with a focus on Aglianico del Vulture, alongside high-quality Moscato, Malvasia, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon. Additionally, a portion of the land is dedicated to olive groves, featuring varieties such as Rotondella and Ogliarola del Vulture. With these premium grapes and olives, Gerardo produces a selection of red, white, and rosé wines, as well as exquisite dessert, sparkling, and fortified wines, along with top-notch extra virgin olive oil.

Modern Cellar Renovation

The winery's cellar has been thoughtfully renovated, featuring large oak barrels and barriques that facilitate the aging and refinement of the wines. Grapes are pressed using traditional vats and millstones, while fermentation occurs in spacious tanks, ensuring the highest quality in every bottle.

Wonderful emotional experience, interesting guided tour in the caves. Even our dog was able to enjoy the coolness of the caves on these hot days. Obviously I really enjoyed the taralli that accompanied the wine tasting. The wines and the discount on purchases are worth highlighting. Congratulations, highly recommended 👏

An unforgettable wine experience! The visit to the Cantine del Notaio was made even more special by the guidance of Gerardo, one of the owners, an extremely competent and passionate winemaker. In addition to accompanying us in discovering the excellent wines produced there, he also immersed us in the history and traditions of the Vulture area. Gerardo carried out incredible research on the historical labels of Aglianico wine until he created the label that today characterizes the bottles of the winery. His commitment is also reflected in the production techniques refined over time, which have resulted in an extraordinary quality and variety of wines. The place is fascinating, with the ancient caves dug into the tuff that preserve the wines in an evocative atmosphere. The welcome is warm and the tasting is a real sensory journey. I highly recommend this experience to all wine and culture lovers!

The visit to the Cantine del Notaio turned out to be a multisensory experience, a journey through history, tradition and passion for Aglianico del Vulture. We were guided on this journey by Gerardo, the owner and oenologist of the winery, a man of great intelligence, a keen irony, a scholar and a passion for wine and history. In two hours he was able to convey to us with enthusiasm and competence the deep bond between his family, the Vulture-Melfese territory and the wine culture. Through his stories we were able to delve into the historical roots of local viticulture and discover the value of a tradition handed down over time. The experience involved all the senses and made the visit a moment of authentic discovery. Constantly stimulated listening through captivating stories. Touch allowed us to come into contact with the wooden barrels, the tuff and the work tools; Furthermore, entering the underground cellar we felt the non-slip nature of the floor beneath our feet, a tangible sign of the 100% humidity, a perfect environment for storing the barrels and refining the wine. The sight was captured by the numerous antique work tools, photographs and historical documents that embellish the cellar and represent a concrete testimony to the dedication and evolution of wine production over the decades. The sense of smell is often flooded by the intense and enveloping aromas that permeate the cellar, a mix of wood, yeasts and rocks. The taste was the highlight of the visit, rounded off by an exciting tasting; a real mini-course of introduction to wine, where you will learn to recognize the nuances of Aglianico wine and appreciate its intensity, structure and balance. The Cantine del Notaio are not just a place of wine production, but a real treasure trove of history and culture, capable of transmitting emotions and knowledge. Thanks to Gerardo and his passion, the visit became an experience that left an indelible impression in the memory and heart.

A great experience thanks to the expert guide who took us to the ancient cellars and told us the origins of a wine that speaks for itself!! A story that is told in fluent English due to the presence of two English guests! The tasting is done exclusively with typical local products and a discount when buying their wines. Everything 🔝

I finally had the chance to visit this famous winery in Rionero, the hometown of my great-grandfather's father. It wasn't possible on my first visit, but this year I was able to enjoy their delicious Moscato Prosecco. Even though I live far away in Iceland, I promise to return soon. I would have loved to bring a few bottles, especially after hearing from my Telesca relatives that their wines won the award for the best wine in Italy for two years. I can't wait to try them! The two girls who served me were very kind and helpful. I highly recommend this winery to anyone in the area. It's a place full of history and tradition with very high quality products. See you soon, Rionero! ♥️
