The Story of Elena Fucci

In 2000, a pivotal decision changed the course of the Generoso family’s vineyard. The son chose to dedicate his life to nurturing the vines that his grandfather had planted in the 1960s. This commitment was not just a personal sacrifice but a heartfelt effort to preserve a family legacy. Nestled in Contrada Solagna del Titolo, at the base of the majestic Monte Vulture, this estate is renowned for producing the exceptional Aglianico del Vulture wine. The extinct volcano, standing at 1,326 meters, enriches the region's soil, contributing to the unique character of its wines. The family has chosen to focus on a single wine, “Titolo,” which showcases the distinct terroir and microclimate of the area, earning accolades for its quality and representation of Aglianico.

Blessed Estates

Set at an elevation of over 600 meters, the estate benefits from the mineral-rich soil shaped by Monte Vulture. The vineyard practices are akin to gardening, emphasizing respect for the vine's natural cycle. The family avoids chemical products, opting instead for traditional methods, such as using brooms they have dried themselves to support the vines. This meticulous care results in a wine that reflects the land's essence, making it truly remarkable. Wine enthusiasts will appreciate the dedication and craftsmanship that go into every bottle of Titolo, a true representation of Basilicata's winemaking heritage.

The year 2025 began with two visits to two wineries that I had wanted to discover for a long time. One of these was “Elena Fucci”, one of the most awarded companies in Basilicata and a few kilometers from Melfi. Due to the low season, I visited the company together with my father and that was it: there were no other customers and this, combined with the fact that Elena herself led the visit, allowed me to have the experience that I value most when visiting the cellars, that is, something intimate together with those who gave birth to this reality. Although the package only included three wines and the company's oil, Elena was generous and also let me taste a special edition of her flagship wine and also the vermouth. In order: - “Titolo” Pink Edition (a really pleasant rosé), - “Titolo”, the company's most famous product, always based on Aglianico and corresponding to the DOC “Aglianico del Vulture”, - “Titolio”, EVO oil composed of the Ogliarola del Vulture, Cima di Melfi and Pendolino varieties, - “Sceg”, a wine made from vines that were close to “destruction”, - “Title for the 25th anniversary”, - “Titolo” in vermouth version. In addition, Elena also resells (and in some cases produces) many other delicacies, such as compotes, cured meats, creams, beauty products, condiments and more.

On a recent trip to Basilicata I spent a wonderful couple of hours being informed and inspired by the incredibly passionate and knowledgeable Elena Fucci. Her are at 600m on the side of Mount Vulture, for which the appellation Aglianico di Vulture is named. Hers are the highest DOC and DOCG vineyards in the region. She hadn’t planned to become a winemaker, but when her parents decided to sell the vineyard planted by her great grandfather she couldn’t bear to part with this piece of family history, so threw herself wholeheartedly into oenology. She was blessed to make wine with her grandfather for 20 years and today combines his intuitive knowledge with her scientific background, making excellent wine with both head and heart. Her focus is singular: a small vineyard growing just one grape made into wine under one label. For anyone serious about understanding Basilicata’s most important grape and its potential, I highly recommend her guided tasting which is conducted in a room above the winery, looking out over the vines. My personal favourite is her dark, savoury rosato, which is mor like a chilled red wine than a rosé. Elena has great tips on local restaurants too!

On the advice of friends who had already been there, we decided to visit Elena Fucci's cellar. When we arrived at the company we were greeted by Mr. Salvatore (Elena's father). As can be read in other reviews, the added value of the guided tour is that it reveals the love of a family for its territory, that anecdotes from the past are told and that it expresses the determination and strength of a girl who did not want to leave her own territory and it invested time and resources in what would become a leading product in a difficult area. All this also allowed her to be named Knight of Labor in 2023. There is little to say about the quality of the wines... excellent (we chose the 5 glasses route)... Special mention also goes to Mrs. Lucia who prepared a "snack" of excellent quality. I highly recommend anyone travelling through Basilicata to stop at this winery, where you can feel the love for "his creation" in every corner. The prices are absolutely in line with the quality of the wines tasted.
