Casa Ermelinda Freitas winery: quality has the highest priority

Casa Ermelinda Freitas Vinhos was founded in 1920 by Deonilde Freitas and then continued by Germana Freitas. This was followed by Ermelinda Freitas taking the helm after the untimely demise of her husband Manuel João de Freitas.

The winery has, from its very beginnings, made the quality of its vineyards and wines a top priority

When the company first started, wines were produced and sold wholesale and unbranded. It was the current management under Ermelinda and her daughter Leonor that it was decided to take on the challenge which involves in creating a self-brand wine. The year of the company’s new beginning in wine making was 1997, with red wine “Terras do Pó tinto”, which was the first to be produced and bottled on the premises of the Ermelinda Freitas winery.

A wide range of different wine styles

Leonor Freitas inherited 60 hectares of vineyard made up of just two grape varieties: Castelão and Fernão Pires, located in Fernando Pó in the region of Palmela. She sought to make innovations and improvements and therefore, took the decision to introduce a much wider range of grape varieties. Today, Casa Ermelinda Freitas Vinhos owns 440 hectares of vineyars which cultivate the likes of Castelão, Fernão Pires, Touriga Nacional, Syrah, Gewurztraminer, Carménère, Trincadeira, Alvarinho, Sauvignon Blanc and Verdelho grapes.
