A Rich History

Castello Tricerchi boasts over 600 years of captivating history in the picturesque region of Tuscany, within the renowned Brunello di Montalcino appellation. This family-owned castle, a monumental structure, has deep roots in both family and political history. The Tricerchi family was part of the influential “9,” a group of families that held seats on the Siena council in 1290. Construction of the castle began in 1260 and was completed in 1441, showcasing the architectural evolution of the era.
Strategically located on the Via Francigena, the castle once served as a safe haven for travelers and pilgrims journeying to Rome via Siena. A remarkable feature of the castle is a fragment of the Virgin’s Veil, certified by the Papal Bull, which remains housed within its walls. As a significant part of Italy's historical and artistic heritage, Castello Tricerchi is a must-visit for history enthusiasts.

Winemaking At Its Best

At Castello Tricerchi, winemaking is a time-honored tradition. The estate features 14 hectares of organically cultivated vineyards, situated less than 300 meters from the castle. Here, seven distinct parcels of Sangiovese Grosso grapes are nurtured, including Vigna del Castello, Sant’ Anna, del Lago, dei Cipressi, and del Piano.
The cellars, located within the castle, maintain a cool temperature ideal for aging wine. Interestingly, the barrels are stored in the castle's former prison, adding a unique character to the winemaking process. Traditional vinification methods are employed, with hand-picked grapes fermented using indigenous yeast to enhance their natural aromas. The wine is aged in Slavonian oak barrels, allowing it to fully develop its rich flavors.

Very nice place with good red wine and friendly staff. They welcomed us warmly and attentively. After the tasting we asked for a little tour of the castle and they explained a lot about the land and wine making. I liked it because I learned new things. It's amazing to know how much impact climate change has on the making of good wine! I recommend - there are 3 types of tasting (15€/20€/30€) and the views are incredible!

This place is absolutely breathtaking. You can literally feel the history of this beautiful castle. It is family-run, so you get an intimate experience, accompanied with some of the best wine I've had in Italy. They are wonderful to work with, if you want wine shipped to your home- wherever it may be. I brought both my parents here on separate trips, and will continue to go back everytime we return to Italy. It's that worth-it. Alice is fabulous!! We were late and a bit lost, and she eased all of our worries, and ensured that she would wait for us and helped us find the destination. Tomas is part of the family and owner, and he can tell you every interesting story of the home and area. It's a magical experience, and a total gem to find!! If you're even CLOSE to this area, I highly recommend it!!! It's well worth the trip off the beaten path.

The history of the place, the itinerary with the presentation and, of course, the wines presented for tasting are very cool.

This is a special property. The owner, Tommaso Squarcia, is the guardian of this historic estate which his family acquired in 1441. The vineyards surrounding the property are beautiful and the wines are excellent. I own a winery (Flanagan Wines) in Sonoma County and I really appreciate the wines Tommaso is making from this remarkable estate. I highly recommend booking a lunch and tasting here.

Excellent host! Explained the history of the property and their wine making processes in great detail. The wine was very good and super reasonable. Overall the tasting and tour was totally worth it. The tasting room had great views and was super relaxing. We bought a case to be shipped home. Definitely would return.

Worth the visit! Great tour through the castle which we followed with a cooking class lead by Alexandra and her mother. An absolutely incomparable experience with delicious wine. One of the highlights of our trip to Italy and definitely our portion spent in Tuscany.
