Beautiful Château de Côts in famous Bordeaux
Not far from Bordeaux, in Bayon-sur-Gironde, the Bergon family make their wines. It’s just 30 kilometers from Bordeaux but feels like a million miles from the big city. The family is in the Château de Côts since 1930. But they produced organic wines for more than 15 years. It is now under the careful directorship of Remi who returned after learning the ropes abroad. He has recently taken over for his parents Gilles and Anne-Marie. The Bergon Family adhere to the rules of the FNIVAB, to ensure their organic certification and create organic wines full of life and vigor.
Winemaking and Grape Varieties at Château de Côts
The 20 hectares yield 80,000 bottles of traditional vintage (Cuvée tradition) and 10,000 of the superior vintage (Cuvée prestige). Merlot (65%), Cabernet Sauvignon (20%) and Malbec (15%) composed the vineyard. Firstly, Bergon family macerates grapes for 5–6 weeks. Then during the maturation process, the wine rests in a mixture of vats and oak barrels. That is why the winery produces highly regarded red wines with plenty of fruit and spicy notes.
Proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and its Influence
The appellation of the winery is Côtes de Bourg. Chateau de Côts is one of only a relatively small number of wineries that continue to blend with Malbec. The close proximity of the Atlantic Ocean plays an important role in this appellation, enhancing the characteristics of the terroir. Chateau de Côts enjoys the typical clay-limestone soil for which Côtes de Bourg is well known. We encourage a visit to this great winery. The owners will warmly welcome you to share their passion. Please be sure to contact them in advance for a booking.
