A Family-Run Winery Crafting Exceptional Beaujolais Wines
The Story of Domaine de Mourchon
In 1970, Walter McKinlay and his wife Ronnie selected a remarkable Vacqueyras as the house wine for their restaurant, The Udny Arms Hotel in Aberdeenshire. This choice sparked their passion for winemaking. After selling their restaurant, they focused on their dream of creating wine. They purchased land at Mourchon and built the winery from the ground up, inspired by the stunning views of Mont Ventoux. As they approached retirement, they established a brand that would soon gain recognition. Their daughter Kate and son-in-law Hugo Levingston joined the family business, helping to shape Domaine de Mourchon into a respected, independent winery known for its purity and high-quality wines.
The Majestic Terroir of Mourchon
Domaine de Mourchon is nestled in the picturesque Dentelles de Montmirail hills, surrounded by Mont Ventoux to the East, Vaison-la-Romaine to the North, and Avignon to the South-West. This region is renowned for its exceptional vine-growing conditions. The terroir at Domaine de Mourchon consists of three distinct types, each ideal for specific grape varieties. The first features a blend of limestone, grey marl, and clay, perfect for Grenache. The second, with calcareous clay and limestone, enhances the richness and character of Syrah. Lastly, the third terroir, with limestone fragments, retains heat and allows for water permeability, providing essential nutrients for vine development. The wines produced here are classified under the French Appellation d’Origine Protégée (AOP) system, ensuring their quality and authenticity.
