Located in northeastern Alentejo, near Redondo, we focus on producing wines from grape varieties that thrive in our unique soil and climate. Our innovative approach to winemaking enhances the character and craftsmanship of each bottle.
Our winery features a striking underground design, with three levels built beneath the vineyard. This architecture not only preserves the natural beauty of the landscape but also helps maintain a stable temperature, essential for the proper aging of our wines. In 2018, we received the prestigious Building of the Year award from ArchDaily in New York for our commitment to sustainable design.
We prioritize strong partnerships with customers and suppliers, focusing on shared values of excellence, trust, and sustainability. Our winery is crafted to highlight the best qualities of our grapes while respecting the rural environment. By eliminating pumps and relying solely on natural gravity during production, we ensure that the integrity of the wine is preserved throughout fermentation and aging.
Spanning approximately 300 hectares in the village of Freixo, nestled between Serra D'Ossa and Évora, our goal is to maintain the authenticity of this rural landscape. We aim for our wines to reflect the essence of our land, vineyards, and terroir.
Our innovative underground winery, unique in Europe, blends seamlessly into the landscape, supporting the vineyard while preserving the natural ecosystem. This project embodies our respect for nature and showcases the attractive terroir that influences our wines.

Write a reviewThis was my second time coming to Herdade do Freixo, and the place was just as amazing as my first visit! The space is an architectural wonder and so incredibly perfectly and purposefully built. You really do need to visit to understand the beauty of the space, and certainly enjoy some of their lovely wines. Joana did a beautiful job of sharing the story of the space and wines and her passion shone through.

Very kind, friendly and helpful guide. The structure is really beautiful: we were pleasantly impressed by both the architectural aesthetics and the ingenuity to be able to work the wine underground. Last but not least: the wines of very high quality and with original and sophisticated tastes (tasted in a decidedly refined environment)!
