Traditional Winemaking Meets Modern Techniques in Bairrada
Pedro Guilherme Andrade Winery has deep roots in the Bairrada region, tracing its origins back to António Martins Simões, Pedro's great-grandfather, who first planted the family’s vines. The winery focuses on traditional grape varieties like Baga and Castelão. After harvesting, grapes were fermented in wooden vats within a cellar adjacent to the family home. Following the passing of António, Pedro's grandfather, Agostinho Andrade, took over the winemaking process at the Vale de Boi property, which has since expanded under his stewardship. The vineyard was cultivated using traditional methods, with land tilled by hand and enriched with natural compost. In the late 20th century, Pedro's father, António Guilherme Andrade, continued this legacy, modernizing the vineyard while respecting its heritage.
Vibrant Vineyards with Diverse Varieties
The winery has undergone significant transformation, expanding its vineyard area and introducing new grape varieties. The fermentation process has evolved, with stainless steel vats and French oak barrels replacing traditional wooden vats. This generational winemaking tradition thrives on the unique terroir of Bairrada, known for its exceptional conditions for producing both still and sparkling wines. The clay-limestone soils at higher altitudes favor red varieties like Baga and Touriga Nacional, alongside white varieties such as Bical, Cercial da Bairrada, and Chardonnay. The region's moderate climate, characterized by temperate winters and Atlantic breezes, contributes to the wines' acidity, balance, and freshness. The modernized cellar ensures that the quality of the grapes translates into well-structured, elegant wines with great aging potential.
Renowned Wines with a Rich Heritage
Since its establishment in 2010, the PGA-PEDRO GUILHERME ANDRADE brand has gained recognition for its quality wines. The first release was a white sparkling wine, followed by the introduction of a reserve red wine in 2015. By 2017, the portfolio expanded to include a reserved white wine and a rosé sparkling wine. On July 27, 2020, the winery launched its premium line under the TRABUCA brand, featuring a 2015 Cuvée sparkling wine, a 2016 red Baga Bairrada Classic, and a 2017 white Bical Bairrada Classic. The latter two wines were crafted using traditional methods, including foot-treading in open “Lagares” without the addition of oenological products. These wines pay homage to Pedro's father, Guilherme, affectionately known as TRABUCA, and reflect the authenticity and character of the Bairrada region.
