Sidónio de Sousa wines

We are a small family wine producer located in Sangalhos in the heart of Bairrada. We have about 15 hectars of vines producing traditional varieties of the region such as Bical, Maria Gomes, Cercial and Arinto white grapes and Baga red grapes planted in chalkly clay soil in one of the best areas of Bairrada - Figueira da Costa.

Our small traditional winery  located in the center of the village of Sangalhos. has some decades of history. It all started about 100 years ago with my great grandfather. By that time he used to sell the wine in bulk.  The first bottling took place with my grandfather Sidónio de Sousa in 1990. He was encouraged to bottle because in 1980s his wines received some national important awards. Then, in the 1990s, the wines continued to win awards and since then "Sidónio de Sousa" is known for being one of the most faithful depositories of the legacy and history of Bairrada.

The vines are the heart of our project because it is there where everything begins. We have some older (100+ years) and other younger with tradicional varieties Baga, Bical, Cercial, Maria Gomes and Arinto. They are part of the family we take care of each one individually trying to respect as much as we can their needs and their way of expressing doing a viticulture with passion and respect with nature.

In the past we only produced reds DOC Bairrada but nowadays we also produce white and sparkling wines also DOC Bairrada.

Our Baga reds are produced in a tradicional way with good and ripe fruit that develop intense flavours of dark fruits. With a very good estruture and complexity due to the natural acidity and tanins of Baga grape our reds are able to keep evolving for more than 2 decades!

Our sparklings are produced with the classic method and have zero dosage - Brut Nature. Tiny and persistent bubbles with freshness and natural acidity.

Our white is the result of our last adventures. Despite of that is a serious white wine with minerality, tension, acidity and aging potential.
