A Visionary Family Winery in Umbria
A Family Winery
Podere Marella is a charming, family-owned winery nestled in the Colli del Trasimeno DOC area, straddling the border between Umbria and Tuscany in Central Italy. Founded in 1974 by Fiammetta Inga, this winery is a trailblazer in organic winemaking. At a time when few in Italy recognized the value of organic practices, Fiammetta's commitment to sustainability was seen as unconventional. Despite the skepticism, she dedicated herself to enhancing the quality of her wines, earning numerous accolades along the way.
The Estates Today
Today, Podere Marella spans 20 acres of vineyards, producing a diverse range of seven wines, including red, white, and rosé varieties under the Umbria IGT and Colli del Trasimeno DOC labels. The estate showcases local grape varieties such as Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Gamay del Trasimeno, Grechetto, and Vermentino. While Umbria may not be as famous for wine as Tuscany, Podere Marella's offerings, particularly the Godot Sangiovese, rival even the esteemed Brunello di Montalcino, all at a more accessible price point.
Vision for Podere Marella
Fiammetta's vision for Podere Marella continues under the stewardship of her son, Cosimo, who shares her passion for organic winemaking. The estate maintains a small production scale, prioritizing quality over quantity. Their award-winning wines consistently rank among the best in international competitions. Today, Podere Marella remains one of the most pristine and tranquil natural havens in the region, inviting wine lovers to appreciate its beauty and craftsmanship.
