Tradition and Innovation at Podere Scurtarola

With a rich history spanning 180 years, the Lorieri family has cultivated a profound respect for the vineyard's ecosystem. This respect fuels their curiosity and commitment to finding more sustainable and efficient production methods. At Podere Scurtarola, innovation thrives, with collaborations involving universities exploring the use of drones and robots. However, the essence of the winery remains rooted in the careful observation of the vines, from the color of the grapes to the health of the leaves, alongside traditional practices like manual grafting and tasting to assess sweetness and intensity.

To create exceptional wine, it is essential to listen to the vineyard. This philosophy drives the winery to minimize interference with the natural balance among plants, herbs, and the myriad microorganisms in the soil. Podere Scurtarola avoids herbicides and fertilizers, refrains from tilling the soil, and even abstains from watering the vines, despite the region's hot, dry summers.

A Shortcut to the Good Life

Located along the historic pilgrimage route, Via Francigena, Podere Scurtarola offers a unique experience in the hills between Carrara and Massa. The name "Scurtarola" translates to "shortcut" in the local dialect, reflecting the idea that good company, nature, wine, and delicious food can lead to a fulfilling life. Visitors will find that the path to enjoyment is right here.

Local Grape Varieties and Unique Wines

Passionate about local traditions, Pierpaolo Lorieri has dedicated years to collecting indigenous grape varieties. One standout is the Vermentino Nero, which is vinified and aged for five years in oak barrels at Podere Scurtarola. This wine boasts a deep, almost ink-black hue and a rich, full-bodied flavor. Its high acidity lends a timeless quality, making it a perfect pairing for meat dishes or enjoyable on its own.

An enchanting place on the Candia hills, a unique atmosphere and breathtaking views. The relaxed atmosphere made the day at the farm go as smoothly as possible. The food is excellent, high quality products and abundant wine. You can get there by following the signs, although there are curves, they are well managed. The dishes consumed had a real flavor, they tasted good. If you want to spend an unforgettable day, you must come here. Ideal for celebrations, for young couples, for anyone who loves each other and loves life.

What an experience! We hired a driver to take us to this vineyard and so grateful we did. The drive was a bit of an adventure, but absolutely worth it. Helga guided us through the history of the vineyard, the innovation and research happening at the winery, and we got to sample AMAZING wine paired with the tastiest local delicacies. The kids loved the juice and snacks as well. We were even able to meet the owner of the winery who gave us an inspired overview of his philosophy on wine making. Visiting this vineyard was a once in a lifetime experience. We hope to be back soon!

We did a tour of the estate, followed by a tasting of their wines (the whole thing lasted about two hours). Helga, the PR person, did an excellent job. The price of the tasting is quite high (40 euros), but it includes a wide variety of appetizers and very fresh cheeses and the possibility of tasting 4 wines (the portions here are also more than generous). More than a tasting, here you live a 360 degree experience. I absolutely recommend it.
