A Beautiful Celalr in the heart of Napa Valley

Shadowbox Cellars is a venture of two families - the Holz and the Preiser who founded this cellar in 2009. Located in the historic Downtown Napa, it is the smallest cellar and tasting room in Napa Valley. This cellar is a partnership between Monty & Sara Preiser, their son and his wife, Justin & Stacy Preiser, and their friends Ira & Eydie Holz who came together to fulfill their dream of producing the superb wine in the region. The name of the cellar 'Shadowbox' comes from a family tradition of hanging a box packed with little mementos on the wall. To personalize the bottle, each owner has selected a single item to symbolize on their label.

Wines From Different Vines

This winery does not own any vineyards; instead, they source nearly all of their grapes from tiny family-owned vineyards, largely in Napa but also in Sonoma County. They collect grapes from selected vineyards and, in collaboration with a dedicated winemaking team who meticulously guide each varietal from vine to barrel to produce wines of exquisite distinction and beauty. Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are the grape varieties that are grown in the area.

Great experience. Loved doing a wine tasting with gourmet potato chips (which were delicious). The owner was great too, we asked for dinner recommendations and he called a few restaurants on our behalf to see if they had any availability!

Fabulous parklet tasting in the sunshine with really outstanding wines, managed by the lovely and super knowledgeable Justin. Older vintages than other tastings, and it shows! We tried five wines and bought three of them - hands down the most successful tasting in Napa.

This is a must. Some of the best wines I have ever tasted. For sure the best rosé and white wine I've ever had. Also, Justin is a fantastic host. If you can only do one tasting, this is the one you should do. If you're going many, do this one sober so you can actually appreciate how good it is.

This guy has a clear vision of what he wants from wine and he's right. Everything he puts out is gold. I hate chardonnay, but his? Great. Acidity and dryness are king here in all his wines and you are able to really appreciate the grapes for their complexity without feeling like you're just drinking fruit juice.

Shadow box... knew it was going to be an amazing experience once you passed through that red door. Greeted by vintner and owner Justin. Took a quick look at the flight menu and took a seat. A rosè, a white and 3 reds. He started each pour with an opening intro. It was casual conversation and flowed unlike some places where people sound scripted. The space is warm and inviting and attached to another tasting room that he is also affiliated with. Not usually a fan of Rosé I was today. Light refreshing with a pop of cranberry and kiss of blueberry. Impressed to actually captures those notes. Next was Chardonnay and again I was pleasantly surprised with tastes of melon and was that hazelnut as well? Pinot Noir was the the third taste and I could not get enough. We talked about notes and scents and how the stemware will take or add to the experience. With that said- I thought I was pretty hip with my collection of Reidel glasses. Justin explained why he choice his ( quirky/ uniquely) shaped glasses. So his claim was the glass makes the difference as he poured a taste of the Pinot Noir into a Reidel glass, I took a taste. I have been doing it wrong for years! The taste was heavy and dare I say metallic in taste! The same bottle poured into the lightweight unique glass and it was light and airy. It genuinely tastes better! It was surreal- no gimmicks, no tricks. I’m sold! I tossed the rest of the Reidel Pinot noir .... who would have known. Next was red blend- a delightful savory blend that left you wanting more. Cherries and spices and not at all acidic as some red blends can be. Last was the Cabernet Sauvignon. Big bold taste, love the hints of vanilla and this was also served in the larger size glass to let it aerate as you swirled and sipped. So much to learn and experience. I will be back soon. I purchased 2 glasses and 2 bottles. This place is for someone is who genuinely interested in wine and wants to learn about his process in casual conversation. The taste price is definitely worth it for the experience. Thanks Justin !
