A Tour and Wine Comparison Lesson at the Tenuta Alois Lageder
Experience the love in the wines
Tenuta Alois Lageder works without chemicals and synthetic products for plant protection, i.e. herbicides, insecticides, and mineral fertilizer. Instead they make good use of biodynamic preparations and homeopathic infusions, and promote biodiversity by sowing ground cover plants and planting shrubs, introducing animals into the vineyards, and fertilizing the soil with compost. All these measures lead to improved soil quality and vine fertility. They believe that the key to successful agriculture is working with natur with and not against it. The modern person often no longer sees nature´s interrelationships and has lost the working knowledge that our forebears acquired through observation over the millennia.
The Lageder family are strong opponents of fossil fuels. They are very much inclined toward nature and tend to choose an alternative eco-friendly, method to everything. Founded in 1823, it is now run by the sixth generation of Alois Clemens Lageder. The winery building was renovated in 1995, it was made focusing on sustainable construction using healthy building materials. The entire house is powered by solar, water, and geothermal energy, all very much nature friendly, making them pioneers in Alto Adige.
The family and its affinity for wine go back to 1823 when the young craftsman Johann Lageder set himself up as a wine merchant in Bolzano. His successors started to produce their wines and acquired several vineyards. The family business grew over the years. Then, since the middle of the 1970s, Alois IV – together with his sister and her husband and oenologist Luis von Dellemann – set about repositioning the winery with a strict focus on quality and innovative methods in the vineyard and cellar. Today, the 50-hectare family-owned vineyards are farmed biodynamically.
