A stone’s throw from Murphy’s gold camp
Twisted Oak Winery is located 5 miles southwest of Murphy’s old gold camp in the Californian Sierra Foothills. The winery is perched on a local hilltop in an abandoned gold mine, which the entire winery is built on. The winery was started by Jeff Sai after he and his wife vacationed in the area and then decided to purchase the land on which the winers stands.
Experience the unique wines from Twisted Oak Winery
The owner planted all the vines and established the winery, from which the first wines were produced in 2002. As part of the marketing of the winery, Jeff and his wife also created the fictional Rubber Chicken National Forest which runs along the two routes approaching the winery and passes through a range of trees and shrubs decorated with rubber chickens.
The wines of The Twisted Oak Winery have become famous for their offbeat names which reflect Jeff’s sense of humour
One of the more popular wines is named the Potty Mouth! Despite his sense of humour and playful approach to the winery, Jeff takes pride in his winemaking and is determined to produce wines that are authoritative and that express the grapes of the vineyard.
Taste some Rhone inspired wines
When he initially planted the vines, it was determined that the land was perfect for the growth of traditional Iberian and Rhone Valley grapes. Today, the most popular wine produced by the winery is the River of Skulls, which can be described as a muscular yet graceful take on a traditional Mourvedre. The signature wine of Twisted Oak Winery is the Spaniard, which is a blend of Tempranillo, Graciano and Garnacha.
