The Retief Family currently owns the winery, as they bought the estate in 1937. Jean Retief convinced her husband, Hennie Sr., to name the winery Van Loveren because of her ancestral Dutch connections. In the early years, they made wine for brandy and sweet wines. In the 1960s, Nico and Wynand Retief started producing wines for wholesale. In 1980, the Van Loveren brand was formed, and the first 500 bottles of their top quality wines were bottled. The third generation of the winery took over in the 1990s. The sons of Wynand and Nico introduced the Four Cousins range of wines that are the biggest selling bottled wine of South Africa.
