A Rich History Since 1980
The Retief family has owned the estate since 1937, when Jean Retief inspired her husband, Hennie Sr., to name the winery Van Loveren, honoring her Dutch heritage. Initially focused on producing brandy and sweet wines, the winery transitioned to wholesale production in the 1960s. The Van Loveren brand was officially established in 1980, marking the bottling of their first 500 bottles of premium wine. By the 1990s, the third generation took the reins, introducing the Four Cousins range, which has become South Africa's best-selling bottled wine. The region's ideal climate and soil conditions contribute to the exceptional quality of their wines.
Diverse Grape Varieties for Quality Wines
Van Loveren cultivates a variety of grapes, including Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Pinotage, Pinot Gris, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz, and Pinot Noir. These grapes are used to create a diverse selection of high-quality red, white, rosé, dessert, sparkling, and fortified wines. The estate also serves as a welcoming destination for families, inviting visitors to their charming farmhouse and traditional rondavel tasting room for an authentic wine tasting experience.
