Angas Plains Estate is a charming 40-hectare winery nestled in the renowned Langhorne Creek wine region, just 50 minutes south of Adelaide, South Australia’s capital. This picturesque area spans 6000 hectares of vineyards, benefiting from an ideal climate and fertile soils that consistently yield premium quality grapes. The estate features two large holding dams, ensuring minimal irrigation for the vines during the hot summer months.

Dedication and Care in the Vineyard

Phillip and Judy Cross manage Angas Plains Estate, which they established in 1994 on their 100-acre property. Between 1994 and 2001, they planted 34 acres of Shiraz, 25.5 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, and 2 acres of Chardonnay, all on a single trellis. The vineyard thrives on the ancient floodplains of the Angas River. To enhance soil health, they plant cover crops between the vines, which serve as mulch and improve organic matter. Their sustainable practices focus on minimizing water usage and reducing soil moisture evaporation, allowing the vines to flourish in harmony with their environment.

Expert Winemaking Techniques

At Angas Plains Estate, exceptional wines begin in the vineyard. The viticulture and winemaking teams collaborate closely to ensure the vines remain balanced and the fruit ripens early in the season without stress. The winery produces wines in small batches, typically around 10 tonnes. Red wines undergo fermentation in open-top vessels for eight days before being pressed and transferred into French barrels for Cabernet and a mix of French and American oak barrels for Shiraz. Each year, 25% to 33% of the barrels are replaced to maintain a harmonious balance between new oak and fruit flavors.
