Sustainable Winemaking in South Australia's Coonawarra Region
Heritage and Strength of Rymill Coonawarra
Founded in 1974 by Peter Rymill, a descendant of Coonawarra's founder John Riddoch, Rymill Coonawarra has become a celebrated winery in the region. Recognized by esteemed wine critic James Halliday as a ‘must-visit’ destination, Rymill produces a variety of wines from its lush vineyards, nurtured in the region's rich terra rossa soil. Visitors can enjoy a unique cellar door experience, complete with custom platters featuring local South Australian produce, all while taking in the stunning views of the estate.
Vineyards of Rymill Coonawarra
At Rymill, we believe that Coonawarra is home to Australia’s finest Cabernet Sauvignon, which is why over fifty percent of our vineyards are dedicated to this variety. The region's cool climate and distinctive terra rossa soil—a blend of red clay and fertile loam over limestone—create the perfect conditions for exceptional grapes.
Our vineyards, which span 140 hectares and are over 40 years old, also produce outstanding Shiraz, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Gewurztraminer. Quality grapes are essential for great wines, and our commitment to sustainable practices ensures that our vines thrive in a healthy ecosystem.
Commitment to Sustainability
Rymill Coonawarra is dedicated to sustainable winemaking, actively researching low-impact techniques to adapt to a changing climate. Our vineyard practices promote biodiversity, allowing us to cultivate quality grapes while maintaining a balanced ecosystem. We have achieved certified sustainable EntWine status through rigorous audits with Freshcare.
In 2019, we introduced two innovative wines, Waste Not, Want Not and Less is More, aimed at reducing waste and environmental impact. Our vineyards support a diverse range of plants and wildlife, with practices like natural fertilizers and sheep grazing to minimize herbicide use. Looking ahead, we are also reducing the weight of our glass packaging to lower transport emissions, furthering our commitment to sustainability.
