The History of Maremma Wines

Founded in 1980 by Luciano, Azienda Agraria Santa Lucia has become a cornerstone of Maremma's wine culture. Nestled on a picturesque hill, the winery's design emphasizes functionality and energy efficiency, with most of the cellar located underground. This thoughtful construction minimizes environmental impact while maintaining optimal temperature control.

With a high roof offering stunning views of the surrounding vineyards and expansive windows that frame the landscape, the winery is set in a serene valley embraced by olive trees and rolling hills.

Award-Winning Wines

In 2010, the winery underwent significant renovations, including the addition of a state-of-the-art cellar. This investment in modern technology has enhanced both the quality of the wines and the winemaking process. Spanning 40 hectares, the vineyard cultivates a variety of grapes, including Sangiovese, Morellino, Vermentino, Ansonica, Alicante, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot. With an annual production of 160,000 bottles, Santa Lucia proudly offers 11 distinct wines that capture the essence of Maremma Toscana.

Quality Over Quantity

Since its inception, the winery has focused on producing wines exclusively from its own indigenous vineyards. The philosophy centers on meticulous care in crafting each wine. Quality starts with land preparation, followed by the careful selection and planting of the best grape clones using biodynamic practices. French oak barrels from Allier and Tronçais are utilized, while stabilization and filtration processes are minimized to preserve the grapes' natural character. The result is a collection of wines that are well-structured, recognizable, and bursting with ripe, fruity flavors.

I tried their Morellino di Scansano 2021 in Rome and although I don't like red wines, I found it very good, tannic with aromas of cherry and finally tobacco. I would like to try it again
