A Historic Tuscany Winery at the Heart of Trade Routes
A Tuscan Winery with a Different History
The estate, located at the crossroads of medieval trade routes between Rome and Northern Italy, was originally a hospital and simply a refuge for travelers seeking rest and healing. From the 1500s onward, it was owned by numerous noble families from Siena and Florence, who left their historical marks on the estate’s architecture: frescoes, the cellar, walls, ceilings, and granary. In 1870 it was purchased by the ancestor of the current owners, a Florentine politician, Francesco Guicciardini. Later, his daughter Marcella and her husband Massimiliano Majnoni expanded the production facilities and founded the winery.
The Remarkable Vineyards of Fattoria Majnoni Guicciardini
Although the vineyards represent less than 15% of the cultivable land, more than half of the time spent in the fields is dedicated to growing and caring for the vines. Since the beginning of the 21st century, only organic fertilizers and practices have been used in vine cultivation to ensure the full expression of the grapes’ characteristics. The family mainly grows local varieties such as Sangiovese, Malvasia Nera, Foglia Tonda, Abrustine, and Pugnitello. The only international variety cultivated here is the classic Chardonnay.
Selective Harvesting
At this winery, the family harvests the grapes by hand for several reasons. First, to select only healthy grapes. Second, to harvest in multiple stages. In the first phase, grapes are picked for the production of simple wines. Later, grapes with high aging potential are harvested to produce fine Chianti and Chianti Riserva wines.
