A Legacy of Winemaking in Emilia-Romagna
Values of the Winery
At Azienda Vitivinicola Saccomani, a deep love for the land and its vineyards has been passed down through generations. While the exact founding date of the estate remains undocumented, a notable recognition from Giuseppe Saccomani in the early 1940s highlights the quality of his table grapes.
In the mid-1980s, Giuseppe shifted the focus of the winery to wine production, initially selling bulk wine before transitioning to bottled offerings. Today, the winery is proudly managed by the fourth generation, Luca and Claudia, who both hold degrees in agro-food studies.
Winemaking Philosophy
The winemaking process at Saccomani begins with meticulous vineyard management, ensuring that only healthy grapes make their way to the cellar. The guiding principle here is "nothing is given and nothing is taken," with minimal intervention during fermentation. The only additive used is a small amount of sulfur dioxide, capped at 40-50 mg/l, and the wines undergo only light filtration before bottling.
Giuseppe's commitment to organic practices laid the groundwork for the winery's natural approach, which Luca and Claudia have further developed. In 2018, they achieved organic certification and began experimenting with biodynamic and permaculture techniques, aiming for a self-sufficient and sustainable operation.
The estate spans 12 hectares across various parcels in the Diolo area of Lugagnano Val d'Arda. The land features red clay typical of the Piacenza hills, ideal for producing structured red wines, while other sections lie within the nationally recognized Parco del Pacenziano, known for its ancient sandy sediments. The winery cultivates a diverse range of grapes, including Malvasia, Ortrugo, Marsanne, and Verdea for whites, and Bonarda, Barbera, and Merlot for reds. Saccomani has a rich history of producing sparkling wines through natural refermentation in the bottle (PET-NAT), prioritizing grape expression over market trends.
Currently, the winery produces around 35,000 bottles annually, showcasing the traditional flavors of the Piacenza region. Notable offerings include sparkling wines like Gutturnio, Ortrugo, and Monterosso, along with two still wines: the white Rio Lupo and the red Rosso dei Baroni, both crafted from carefully selected grapes. Additionally, the Nebula, a passito wine, is produced in limited quantities, highlighting the estate's commitment to quality and tradition.
