The Story of Tenuta La Viola

The Gabellini family, originally from Romagna, settled in Bertinoro in 1962, acquiring land rich with Sangiovese and Albana vineyards. For them, wine is more than just a beverage; it symbolizes love, pride, and the joy of sharing with friends and family. This deep-rooted tradition connects the family to their land, and they believe that the history, dedication, and expertise of those who cultivate the vineyards contribute to the unique quality and character of their wines.

Commitment to Organic Farming

From the outset, the Gabellini family has prioritized organic farming practices. They avoid chemical insecticides, ensuring the health of both the vines and the surrounding environment. This approach helps preserve the natural aromas, vibrant colors, and harmonious essence of their wines. Fertilization and cultivation methods are designed to enhance soil fertility and promote the vitality of local plant and animal species. The vineyards utilize green manure and mechanical turf cutting, steering clear of chemical weeding.

Vineyards and Winemaking Techniques

At Tenuta La Viola, vineyard management and grape harvesting are done by hand, ensuring careful selection during the harvest. In the cellar, spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts captures the essence of each vintage and its terroir. Aging occurs in large wooden barrels and concrete tanks, allowing the wines to maintain their natural characteristics. The winery also experiments with traditional vinification methods, such as using amphorae, resulting in exceptional wines that reflect their heritage.

A fantastic experience! Mrs. Lidia (along with her friendly cat) gave us an authentic experience among the vineyards and cellars of this amazing corner of the earth. Followed by a tasting of incredible wines accompanied by a generous and varied cutting board.

Despite showing up on a day where they were busy with tasks in the vinyard, Mrs. Lidia gave us a tasting. They specialise in Sangiovese, and in particular the wines they make using ancient methods. An active, convivial family vinyard where curiosity and experimentation result in an interesting mix of quality wines.

A wonderful afternoon in which we discovered another flagship of Romagna. Mrs. Lidia has passed on to us the passion for this company and the love for the search for increasingly niche products. The wines tasted took us on a sensory experience of clear and decisive aromas and flavors. Congratulations on everything.

My husband and I have toured a few wineries in the area and La Viola was by far our best overall experience - genuine. Valentina was personable and generous in sharing her extensive knowledge about the grapes and the complexity of the wine making process. The winery itself has a gorgeous vista, enjoyed during the tasting, which included an artfully arranged platter of local bread, cheeses, etc. The wine is exceptional as well. We had intended to purchase a red that we’ve already been drinking. But the whites were fabulous too! So, we ended up taking home as much wine as would fit into our trunk!

I discovered Tenuta La Viola thanks to an e-bike tour organized by eBike Style-Maela of Cesena (thank you!). It was a pleasant experience that I really appreciated: Valentina accompanied us to the visit to the cellar, to the vineyard and explained the wines to us during the final tasting. The wines were actually very good, even more appreciated because Valentina is a very nice girl who manages to convey her passion for wine and for her work!
