Bellaguardia- Winery with Historic Castle Producing Classic Sparkling Wines
Bellaguardia’s classic sparkling wines can be found in Montecchio Maggiore, in Vicenza, under the castles of Romeo and Giulietta. Isidoro Maccagnan and Marco Caltran have set up a wine cellar here to make the wines. Marco’s father, who died in 1997, had bought land and vineyards here to make wines for the family. The Villa and castles of Bellaguardia face each other on the hill, and the castles were built in 1354 by the Lord of Verona Cangrande II. The castle was purchased by the Municipality and underwent many reconstructions to match with the natural surroundings. Giulietta’s castle is used as a restaurant while the Romeo castle is used for cultural activities.
Their Excellent Sparkling Wines
To make unique sparkling wines, you need excellent grapes, and the conditions in the region are perfect for that. The oil contains carbonate substrate, and the climate features cold, breezy nights and fresh air currents. These features allow for the growth of ripe, fruity grapes perfect for making the sparkling wines. The vineyards are spread over 6 hectares, and the Trentino pergola method is used here.
Winery using Integrated and Sustainable Agricultural Methods
The use of integrated and sustainable agricultural methods protects the environment and increases the quality of the soil. The main grapes grown here are Durello and Pinot Bianco.
The classic method is used here for sparkling wines.
It involves many steps and takes as long as three years to produce the wines. The wines made by this method are unique and perfectly reflect the qualities of the region’s terroir and the hard work and skill that goes into the production of the wines.
