A Legacy of Winemaking in Mallorca's Heart
A Rich Heritage of Can Axartell
Can Axartell is a distinguished wine estate located in the northeast of Mallorca, near the charming city and port of Pollença. With a history spanning nearly 800 years, this estate beautifully blends modern winemaking practices with deep-rooted traditions. Founded shortly after the island was reclaimed from Moorish rule in 1229, Can Axartell has evolved from its early days, when vineyards were first discovered, to a prominent winery known for its quality wines. By the 16th and 17th centuries, wines from Can Axartell were already being served to esteemed guests in Pollença. Today, under the stewardship of Hamburg-native Hans-Peter Schwarzkopf, the estate has been meticulously restored, harmonizing with the island's landscape and culture. The commitment to organic practices began in 1999, even as the first vineyards were being established.
The Vineyards of Can Axartell
Can Axartell boasts 34 hectares of vineyards on the estate, complemented by an additional 24 hectares in the interior of Mallorca. The vineyards feature a mix of indigenous and international grape varieties. Notable red varieties include Callet and Manto Negro, with Callet being the first to be planted at the estate. Premsal is the primary white variety cultivated here. The limestone-rich soils, containing about 20% calcium, are ideal for growing red grapes. Rows of Callet flourish alongside Manto Negro, Syrah, Petit Verdot, Merlot, and various Pinot varieties. Additionally, an experimental vineyard of 1.7 hectares showcases rare grape varieties that are nearly extinct on the island, contributing to the unique character of Can Axartell's wines.
