Castelli Romani, Creating Exquisite Italian Wines
Perched on a hillside splendour, a few miles away from the Eternal City Rome, Casal Pilozzo is located in the beautiful municipality of Monte Porzio Catone. The estate-owned vineyards are known as one of the oldest farms of Castelli Romani, producing exquisite Italian wines under DOC, DOCG, and IGP labels. Exceeding limits of wine production, the winery also delivers delicious grappas and extra virgin olive oil.
Cellar Inside a Prehistoric Cave
Today, standing on the remains of an ancient structure, a home of Roman Emperor Trajan’s sister and niece, the Pulcini family owns the Pilozzo Winery. Various historical personalities, including Avidius Trachalus, Orson Welles – an American actor, Brandi and Bottai families – ancient winemakers, etc. lived here as well. The Pulcini family has innovatively renovated the cellar located deep inside a prehistoric cave, dug into the tuff that leads to a huge room where wines are stored for aging and refining.
Volcanic Soils of Lazio Region
Rigorous organic grape farming is what makes Casal Pilozzo famous in the Lazio territory. The estate grows a wide array of vines, such as Malvasia Puntinata, Grechetto, and Chardonnay, for making luscious white wines. Additionally, for reds, the family cultivates fruity Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon, along with Cabernet Franc, Syrah, and Merlot. All the activities, from the vinification of grapes to maintaining the quality of olives, everything is carried out by the Pulcini family.
Surrounded by 13 hectares of volcanic vineyards and an elegant park, the farmhouse of Casal Pilozzo is the cynosure of every eye visiting the winery. It is a place where tourists can spend some memorable moments and taste some of the best vintages.
