Celebrating Women in Winemaking in Tuscany
The Women Behind the Wine Business
Casato Prime Donne is a remarkable winery located in the scenic hills of the Brunello di Montalcino region. Founded in 1998 by Donatella Cinelli Colombini, who hails from a family of Brunello producers, this winery stands out as the first in Italy to be entirely run by women. With a rich history dating back to the 16th century, Casato Prime Donne is one of the oldest estates in Brunello di Montalcino, passed down through generations.
Traditional Techniques and Sustainable Practices
Spanning 40 hectares, with 17 dedicated to Sangiovese vineyards, Casato Prime Donne emphasizes sustainable and organic farming practices. Officially certified organic since 2018, the winery avoids barriques, opting instead for traditional French oak casks to age their Brunello for a minimum of two years. This method results in wines that are powerful, structured, and complex. During the grape harvest in September and October, the team meticulously handpicks the grapes, ensuring only the best are selected for winemaking.
Donatella’s Impact on Italian Winemaking
Since establishing Casato Prime Donne, Donatella has significantly influenced the Italian wine industry by merging her family’s estates under one banner and promoting a women-led winery. This innovative approach has sparked conversations and garnered attention. Visitors can enjoy a scenic hiking trail around the vineyard, featuring contemporary art and inspiring statements from the winners of the Casato Prime Donne Award, celebrating the contributions of women in winemaking.
