The Women Behind the Wine Business

Casato Prime Donne is a remarkable winery located in the scenic hills of the Brunello di Montalcino region. Founded in 1998 by Donatella Cinelli Colombini, who hails from a family of Brunello producers, this winery stands out as the first in Italy to be entirely run by women. With a rich history dating back to the 16th century, Casato Prime Donne is one of the oldest estates in Brunello di Montalcino, passed down through generations.

Traditional Techniques and Sustainable Practices

Spanning 40 hectares, with 17 dedicated to Sangiovese vineyards, Casato Prime Donne emphasizes sustainable and organic farming practices. Officially certified organic since 2018, the winery avoids barriques, opting instead for traditional French oak casks to age their Brunello for a minimum of two years. This method results in wines that are powerful, structured, and complex. During the grape harvest in September and October, the team meticulously handpicks the grapes, ensuring only the best are selected for winemaking.

Donatella’s Impact on Italian Winemaking

Since establishing Casato Prime Donne, Donatella has significantly influenced the Italian wine industry by merging her family’s estates under one banner and promoting a women-led winery. This innovative approach has sparked conversations and garnered attention. Visitors can enjoy a scenic hiking trail around the vineyard, featuring contemporary art and inspiring statements from the winners of the Casato Prime Donne Award, celebrating the contributions of women in winemaking.

Casato Prime Donne offers guided tours with tasting, where you can taste good wine and understand its production processes. The interesting thing is that during the tour you will also learn about some historical moments of Montalcino, told through the works of art kept in the cellar. An interesting tour that I recommend not only to lovers of good wine.

Casato Prime Donne in Montalcino has invented the “Brunello experience” tasting in the cellar following panels on local history and contemporary art installations. A tasting path also for the “wine and music tasting” experience where the wines and the soundtracks are chosen by a musician sommelier.

My first experience in a vinery. Excellent reception and tour around the cantine. We have been explained the history for the Family, back from the middle age to present. Very impressive and fascinating how they described the old methods and modern one. The wine produced here is famous all around the world and the Brunello di Montalcino is a trade mark of the made in Italy that made Italians so proud. I would recommend to come with a taxi just in case police will pull you out on the side of the road for breath testing. There are several other wine producer in this famous area. This one for me is the best of all.

Great place to taste some great wines. Our hostess, Antonella did an excellent job with the tour and answered all the questions. They really support the arts with painting sculptures and other artwork around the campus. They have walks through the fields for hiking. Nice wines, primarily based on Sangiovese grape. We joined the wine club based on our purchase. They also have multiple grades of olive oil, and a couple of grappas.

We have not stopped talking about how wonderful our tour with Antonella was at Casato Prime Donne. The wines here are exceptional and the best we tried in Montalcino. But it was Antonella’s tour weaving history, art and winemaking that really left a lasting impact on our group. The poise and pace employed by Antonella did not go unnoticed. It was honestly the most remarkable winery tour everyone in our group had ever done, and one which will never be forgotten.
