Castello Di Fonterutoli: A Winemaking Legacy of 24 Generations

Located near Siena in the picturesque Chianti hills, Castello Di Fonterutoli has been a cornerstone of winemaking since 1435. The Mazzei family, stewards of this historic estate, have cultivated a rich tradition that has made Castello Di Fonterutoli a prominent name in Chianti Classico and Tuscany. Under the leadership of Lapo Mazzei for the past two decades, the winery continues to honor its storied past while looking forward to a promising future.

For over six centuries, the Mazzei family has crafted exceptional wines, infusing each bottle with passion and heritage that resonates through generations.

Wines from Stony Soils

The vineyards at Castello Di Fonterutoli thrive in predominantly stony soils, earning the nickname “wine of the stones.” The estate spans 650 hectares, with 117 hectares dedicated to prime vineyard locations such as Fonterutoli, Siepi, Badiola, Belvedere, and Caggio. The vineyards are situated at altitudes ranging from 230 to 500 meters above sea level, contributing to the unique character of the wines. The winery employs traditional methods for vine cultivation and aging, ensuring consistency and quality that set the standard for top-tier Chianti Classico. With an annual production capacity of 700,000 bottles, each wine reflects the estate's commitment to excellence.

Commitment to Sustainability

Castello Di Fonterutoli prioritizes sustainability in all aspects of its operations, focusing on the well-being of employees, the environment, and the local community. The winery has adopted sustainable agricultural practices aimed at preserving the ecosystem and enhancing biodiversity. This commitment includes eliminating chemical fertilizers and weeding, as well as recycling processing waste to create organic compost for vineyard use.

The Fonterutoli Castle of the Mazzei family is a historic winery of the Chianti Classico, the place is large and beautiful, the organization is good and you can choose between different tastings for all tastes and budgets. The barrel cellar is very beautiful and there is also an osteria for those who also want to eat.

I had a wonderful experience at Osteria di Fonterutoli! The place itself is stunning, so beautiful, warm, and with an amazing decoration that adds to the charm. We also tried their winery, which featured the top wines of the Tuscany area. The wines were truly exceptional, and the winery tour was a highlight of our visit. For dinner, we opted for the tasting menu and paired it with different wines. The appetizer was good, and the pasta with ragu was outstanding, perfectly cooked and flavorful. The pork dish, however, was not to my liking, as it lacked flavor, but the tiramisu made up for it, both being absolutely delicious. Overall, this place offers an incredible experience combining accommodation, winery tours, and dining, all in one location. It’s a must-visit for anyone exploring Tuscany, and I highly recommend it for its beauty, hospitality, and quality of offerings.

Special winery, the hotel is like its own little place, quietly located rooms in different categories! There is also the option of a tour and tasting in the in-house wine cellar. A good restaurant is also included. Breakfast was also excellent.
