Experience 800 Years of Rich History and Exceptional Wines
A Rich Tapestry of History
The story of Château d’Astros reads like a captivating novel, with roots stretching back over 800 years. This estate has witnessed the rise and fall of the Knights Templar, the flourishing of the Renaissance, and the influence of Marseille's bourgeoisie. While Roman artifacts hint at ancient cultivation, the estate truly began in the 13th century. In 1314, the original farm transformed into a Commandery under the Knights of Malta. After becoming a national property during the Revolution, the estate returned to private hands in 1802 when Maximin Martin, a prosperous soapmaker from Marseille, constructed the stunning castle inspired by Tuscan villas. Since 1963, current owner Bernard Maurel has revitalized the estate, introducing new grape varieties and establishing a modern cellar, leading to the production of the first AOC Côtes-de-Provence wines in 1970.
A Sanctuary of Nature
Château d’Astros spans 680 hectares, featuring vast areas of untouched wilderness. This estate harmonizes air, water, earth, light, plants, and vines, celebrating the beauty of nature. The diverse landscapes, including forests and plains, support a rich variety of flora and fauna. For centuries, the vineyard has adapted to changing climates and social conditions, making it one of the most sustainable vineyards in Provence.
Soil That Nurtures Variety
With over 800 years of viticulture, the estate's family believes in the synergy between nature and winemaking. The region benefits from abundant sunshine, refreshing winds, and a variety of soils that contribute to the creation of exceptional wines. The alluvial soils along the Argens River yield light, fruity, and fresh wines, while the drier clay-limestone terroirs allow vines to root deeply, enhancing aromatic concentration and complexity. This unique combination of elements ensures that each bottle of Château d’Astros wine reflects the essence of its remarkable terroir.
