Domaine Fontanel, Fantastic Wines in the south of France

Six generations of winemakers worked hard to keep the traditional winemaking techniques of Domaine Fontanel alive and to create the finest wines from the northern Catalan country soil. Pierre and Marie Claude Fontanel started Domaine Fontanel by bringing two families together in 1989. Domaine Fontanel currently spreads over 20 hectares of land in Tautavel in the south of France, between the Pyrenees foothills and the Mediterranean Sea.

Sustainable Winemaking at Domaine Fontanel

The major focus at Domaine Fontanel is on creation of sustainable, quality wines. Fertilizers and weed killers are not used in the vineyard to keep the vines healthy. The wine yields are low, mostly less than 30hl/ha. Careful grape selection helps with the crafting of high quality wines with the help of traditional maceration. The domaine produces red, white, rosé, and fortified wines. The varieties of grapes produced here include Syrah, Grenache, Carignan, Mourvèdre, Grenache Blanc and Gris, Roussanne, Viognier and Muscat. The soils at Domaine Fontanel are very important for the vines. The amount of nutrients influences the complexity and concentration of the grape, creating a great diversity of wines flavors and aromas.
