How It All Began

Located just 2 km from the historic center of Évora and a mere 200 meters from the monastery that inspired its name, Adega Cartuxa [Cartuxa Winery] is a remarkable site steeped in history. This ancient building, once a Jesuit retreat for the Society of Jesus, played a significant role in the education at the Universidade de Évora during the 16th and 17th centuries. Following the Jesuits' expulsion in 1759 by Marquês de Pombal, the property transitioned to state ownership. By 1776, it had evolved into a vital wine press, central to the region's production. In the 19th century, the Eugénio de Almeida family acquired the estate, carefully renovating and expanding it while preserving its architectural heritage.

Winemaking Experience

Your visit to this historic winery begins in the picturesque surroundings of Quinta de Valbom. Here, you can learn about the rich history of the estate and the advancements in winemaking techniques over the years. The experience culminates with a tasting session, where you can choose from one of four curated options, each showcasing the unique flavors of Alentejo wines.

Very nice experience. We did the "visit tour" and it was amazing. Miguel (our guide) was very friendly and passionate in telling the winery history. The ticket also included a glass of wine at the end. Super recommended!

This was probably the most welcoming winery we have visited in Portugal. The staff is very nice and gentle, answer all your questions. Besides the visit that is no doubts unmissable, they offer extra wines tasting by the glass. An opportunity to understand the famous wine Pera Manca and many others.

Adega do mítico Pera Manca. The process of making the wines is not the same as it is, but there are many different types of wine. There are sound and barriers for demonstration. Predio antigo e histórico. A loja de vinhos é gira.
