Experience Winemaking in a Historic Setting
How It All Began
Located just 2 km from the historic center of Évora and a mere 200 meters from the monastery that inspired its name, Adega Cartuxa [Cartuxa Winery] is a remarkable site steeped in history. This ancient building, once a Jesuit retreat for the Society of Jesus, played a significant role in the education at the Universidade de Évora during the 16th and 17th centuries. Following the Jesuits' expulsion in 1759 by Marquês de Pombal, the property transitioned to state ownership. By 1776, it had evolved into a vital wine press, central to the region's production. In the 19th century, the Eugénio de Almeida family acquired the estate, carefully renovating and expanding it while preserving its architectural heritage.
