The Abreu Callado family has a rich history in winemaking that dates back to the end of the old constitutional regime in Portugal. José de Abreu, a farmer married to Rosa do Carmo Monteiro Callado Godinho, benefited from Pombaline legislation that allowed the transfer of properties from noble families to farmers. This legislation strengthened the land tenure of families like the Abreu Callados, paving the way for future generations to thrive in agriculture.

A Legacy of Leadership

Francisco Abreu Callado (1835-1913) significantly expanded the family’s wealth by marrying into the affluent Godinho family. His acquisitions in the municipalities of Avis, Arraiolos, and Estremoz positioned him among the land elite of Alentejo. Francisco also served as Mayor of Avis, where he was known for his charitable contributions, including funding the restoration of local churches and supporting community initiatives.

Commitment to Community

Following Francisco's passing, his children continued his philanthropic efforts. They established a laboratory at the Avis hospital, funded a primary school, and built an asylum for the elderly. Cosme de Campos Callado, the last of the brothers, dedicated his life to ensuring the well-being of the community. In 1948, he founded a foundation to support the agricultural house and improve the quality of life for local workers and their families.

Vineyards and Wines

Today, Fundação Abreu Callado stands as a testament to the family’s commitment to winemaking and community service. The winery produces high-quality wines that reflect the unique terroir of Alentejo. Visitors can appreciate the rich history and dedication behind each bottle, making it a must-visit destination for wine enthusiasts.
