A Historic Winery in the Heart of South Africa's Wine Country
Protected by the Mountains of Helderberg
Ken Forrester Wines is a historic winery nestled on the picturesque slopes of Stellenbosch, one of South Africa's premier wine regions. With over 25 years of experience, this estate has garnered numerous national and international awards, showcasing its commitment to quality. Ken Forrester produces a diverse range of wines, including exquisite red, white, and rosé options, as well as delightful dessert and sparkling wines.
A Legacy Dating Back to 1689
The winery's roots trace back to the 17th century when various winemaking families inhabited the estate. In 1694, Frederick Botha planted the first vines and established the winery. The estate changed hands in 1833 when the Scholtz family renamed it Scholtzenhof, cultivating grapes for nearly a century. After years of dormancy, Ken and Teresa Forrester purchased the property in 1993, initiating a significant restoration of both the vineyards and the winery. Their first vintage under the Ken Forrester label was released in 1994.
Unique Terroir Near the False Bay Coastline
The vineyard benefits from the maritime climate of Stellenbosch, allowing for the cultivation of high-quality grapes through sustainable practices. Notable varieties include Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. In the Helderberg area, the estate also grows fruity Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Grenache, thriving in the coastal conditions that enhance their flavor profiles.
