Experience a Historic Winery in Clare Valley, South Australia
Koonowla: A Historic Gem in Clare Valley
Koonowla Wines stands as one of the Clare Valley’s most cherished estates, featuring stunning historic stone buildings and expansive rolling hills. Located just east of Auburn in South Australia, this property has a rich history, with its first vines planted in the 1890s. By 1900, Koonowla was producing an impressive 250,000 liters of wine each year until a devastating fire in 1926 halted its operations.
A New Chapter for Koonowla
In 2019, father and son duo Nick and Alex George revitalized Koonowla after acquiring it from the Michael family, who began replanting vines in 1991. By 2001, the vineyard expanded to 240 acres. Today, Koonowla features carefully selected terroirs that yield high-quality Clare Valley varietals, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, and Riesling, along with smaller blocks of Merlot and Semillon. With a commitment to sustainable viticulture, Koonowla has been a source of expressive Clare Valley wines for over a century, now backed by a dedicated winemaking team.
