Discover a pioneering estate with vines planted in 1896

Koonowla Is A Living Treasure Of The Clare Valley

Koonowla is one of the Clare Valley’s most iconic and picturesque properties with beautiful historic stone buildings and rolling broad acre hills. Located just east of Auburn in the Clare Valley of South Australia, the property was first planted with vines in the 1890s. By 1900, the winery was producing 250,000 liters of wine annually before the disastrous fire in 1926.

Rebirth of the Winery After the Disaster

Koonowla is a dream come true for father and son, Nick and Alex George. A gracious estate pulsating with history was revived by the duo in 2019 after purchasing it from the Michael family who started replanting vines in 1991 which grew across 240 acres by 2001. Today the Koonowla vineyard comprises blocks of meticulously selected terroir most suited to producing the highest quality classic Clare Valley varietals of Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, and Riesling, as well as a small block of both Merlot and Semillon. Koonowla is a leader in the field of high-quality sustainable viticulture and source of regionally expressive Clare valley wines for more than a century with re-invigorated vineyards and a new winemaking team. The winery is committed to offering premium quality wines at an encouraging and affordable price.

Koonowla’s Beautifully Renovated Cellar Door

Koonowla’s beautifully renovated cellar door overlooks the stunning homestead gardens and rolling vineyards adjacent to the property. Since the property’s establishment in 1896, each custodian has added something unique to the Koonowla story. The winery offers tailored wine tasting in the historic tasting room or at the beautiful lawns for those who love outdoor tastings.
