Macchie Santa Maria Cantine: A Boutique Winery in Irpinia

Located on the picturesque eastern slopes of Montemiletto hill, Macchie Santa Maria Cantine has been a beacon of quality winemaking since its establishment in 2010. Nestled in the heart of Irpinia, Campania, this family-run winery revitalizes 50-year-old vineyards, transforming premium grapes into exceptional Irpinia wines. The estate is surrounded by the stunning landscapes, rich history, and vibrant food and wine culture of the Campania Hinterland.

The diverse terroir, characterized by its rural charm and isolation, has preserved a unique enological identity over the years.

Wines Reflecting Irpinia's Cultural Heritage

The name Montemiletto, derived from the Latin “Mons Mulitum,” refers to a military mountain dating back to Roman times. Macchie Santa Maria pays homage to this heritage by naming their wines after ranks of Roman army officers, likening them to soldiers in an “army of wine.” The winery believes that great wines are born in the vineyard, not the cellar. With a commitment to nature, they prioritize quality over quantity, cultivating grapes organically without the use of herbicides or chemicals.

Modern Techniques Meet Traditional Practices

Macchie Santa Maria Cantine manages 12 properties across the Avellino province, including Montemiletto, Montefusco, Santa Paolina, and Lapio. The winery carefully selects grape varieties suited to the local soil, ensuring the best expression of the terroir. While embracing modern technology, they maintain traditional methods to preserve the artisanal quality of their wines. Operating under an integrated production regime, the winery minimizes environmental impact and utilizes green energy in its processes.

We spent a very pleasant afternoon at the Macchie di Santa Maria winery, during which the young owners showed us the vineyards, the cellar and accompanied us on a discovery of some of their products. All truly remarkable. I recommend the visit and tasting

I visited the winery for a tasting and a walk in the vineyard and the quality of the wines tasted impressed and fascinated me! All names that I had already tried elsewhere, but which were definitely elegantly expressed and true to the region. I recommend booking a visit for an unforgettable experience! The owner personally takes care of welcoming guests and does not skimp on tastings. He takes all people to the vineyard who are guided by the love of good wine.

I visited them this August. The cellar is already very beautiful in itself but will certainly be more beautiful in the coming years given the future projects. I had the pleasure of meeting all three generations of winemakers, who were very helpful and friendly. The wines are exceptional, especially the DOCG Fiano, Greco and Taburno. Excellent welcome and delicious tasting platter. Next summer I will definitely make sure to come and see you again. Thank you again for your kindness and for the wonderful morning!
