Located near the charming town of Requena in Valencia, Montesanco Winery boasts a fascinating history that dates back to 1882. Founded by Fidel, the grandfather of renowned Spanish filmmaker Luis García Berlanga, the estate has been producing wine for over a century. Today, Montesanco spans 40 hectares, featuring ancient vines that contribute to its exceptional wines.
Montesanco is known for its two signature regional grapes: Bobal and Macabeo. Bobal, often regarded as the ambassador grape of Valencia, originates from the Utiel-Requena region. This red grape is celebrated for its rich flavors and complexity. In contrast, Macabeo is a white grape known for its delicate aromas. Both varieties have been cultivated in Valencia for over 100 years, making them integral to the region's winemaking heritage.
The wines produced at Montesanco are a testament to the winery's commitment to quality. The Mediterranean and continental climate, characterized by hot summers and cool nights, along with occasional winter snowfall, creates ideal growing conditions. The vineyard's clay-limestone soil yields low production but high-quality grapes. This unique soil composition allows for excellent drainage during dry spells. Montesanco employs a biodiversity approach, avoiding herbicides and pesticides. Instead, they use natural herbal extracts to enhance vine health and manage fungal presence, ensuring the integrity of their wines.

Super, super good organic red wine. Montesanco has 2 locations. One of the best red wines I've had so far. As we drove past we stopped in Teulada, where you can also get the wine by the glass as a small sample ;-)

My wine tasting experience at Montesanco in Teulada was truly exceptional. The guided tour was informative and immersive, led by a knowledgeable team that shared fascinating insights into the region’s history, winemaking processes, and the inspiring journey of Maria and Paco, the passionate couple behind Montesanco. Their personal stories added such depth to the experience, making each tasting feel connected to their vision and love for the craft. The wines themselves were exquisite. MÓN Monastrell and MÓN Tempranillo stood out as my absolute favorites, both rich and full of character, showcasing the unique qualities of the region's terroir. The combination of the vineyard’s serene landscape, attentive staff, and perfectly curated background music created a magical setting. For anyone passionate about wine or simply seeking a memorable experience in a stunning location, Montesanco is a must-visit. I’ll definitely be back for the Full Exoerience.
