A Legacy of Passionate Winemaking in Valencia
A Rich Winemaking Heritage
Years ago, Francisco Martínez Bermell fondly recalled the day his grandmother Filomena introduced him to their family’s cellar. Located in El Grao, a quaint port town, his great-grandfather, Don Pedro Pons, established a winery on Calle de Los Hierros. The young Francisco was captivated by the deep wine deposits, towering spiral staircases, and rows of oak barrels, forever remembering the unique aromas that filled the air.
Crafting Exceptional Wines
Fast forward twenty years, during a tumultuous time in Europe, Francisco's father took charge of the family business, Hijos de Pons Hermanos, in Utiel. It was here that he met Francisco's mother and began his own winemaking journey. With guidance from Don Pascual Carrión, director of the Requena Oenological Station, he learned that the region was home to some of the finest grapes. By the mid-1980s, with the support of his family, he launched their first bottled wines, capturing the essence of the vineyards as the sun set behind them.
Commitment to Quality
Over 150 years have passed since the establishment of the winery in Grao de Valencia, yet the philosophy of winemaking remains unchanged. For Francisco and his nephew Eduardo, the focus is on nurturing the best grape varieties and practicing artisanal methods in the Casa Don Ángel cellar, located in the heart of the Vera de Estenas Pago. As Francisco's father often said, "There are no secrets; you must have a love for wine."
