A Rich Winemaking Heritage

Years ago, Francisco Martínez Bermell fondly recalled the day his grandmother Filomena introduced him to their family’s cellar. Located in El Grao, a quaint port town, his great-grandfather, Don Pedro Pons, established a winery on Calle de Los Hierros. The young Francisco was captivated by the deep wine deposits, towering spiral staircases, and rows of oak barrels, forever remembering the unique aromas that filled the air.

Crafting Exceptional Wines

Fast forward twenty years, during a tumultuous time in Europe, Francisco's father took charge of the family business, Hijos de Pons Hermanos, in Utiel. It was here that he met Francisco's mother and began his own winemaking journey. With guidance from Don Pascual Carrión, director of the Requena Oenological Station, he learned that the region was home to some of the finest grapes. By the mid-1980s, with the support of his family, he launched their first bottled wines, capturing the essence of the vineyards as the sun set behind them.

Commitment to Quality

Over 150 years have passed since the establishment of the winery in Grao de Valencia, yet the philosophy of winemaking remains unchanged. For Francisco and his nephew Eduardo, the focus is on nurturing the best grape varieties and practicing artisanal methods in the Casa Don Ángel cellar, located in the heart of the Vera de Estenas Pago. As Francisco's father often said, "There are no secrets; you must have a love for wine."

Wonderful vineyard, just off the motorway so perfect for a night stop. Sadly arrived too late for dinner and wine tasting so we will just have to back. Excellent breakfast and very friendly owner.

A really great winery. Felix showed us around. An incredibly great gentleman who also speaks English. The wines are absolutely premium and the meals are good value for money.

For wine lovers (or not), this winery offers a special, pleasant, friendly, learning and nature-filled day. Without a doubt, it is worth the visit with tasting. The staff is friendly, the space is cozy. A 10 for Sergio (guide) and Eduardo, who assisted us during the reservation process.

A place to unwind, today we were able to enjoy the charm of the vineyards. After a visit to the facilities, a spectacular tasting. Highlighting the work of Jesus the sommelier, it was a pleasure to enjoy the workshop with him. He made technical words easy to understand, it is clear that he likes his job. We will definitely return, but this time we will enjoy the hotel too.

The Hotel Bodega Vera de Estenas in Utiel won us over with its location on a hill, surrounded by vineyards that offered a wonderful view, close to the motorway. Our room was spacious, modern and designed for disabled guests. The direct, step-free access from the car park was particularly pleasant. The reception, wine sales room and restaurant were located in a cozy, open space. The restaurant offered a well-thought-out menu selection with three different menus, each of which included a bottle of the house wine and water. The quality of the food was fine and the wine rounded off the meal perfectly. Dinner was served from 7 p.m., which was ideal for us. However, breakfast didn't start until 8 a.m., which was a bit inconvenient for early risers or travelers with a tight schedule. Overall, the hotel was a good recommendation for guests passing through, especially for wine lovers. Dogs were also welcome, which we really appreciated.
