Podere L’Aja: A Gem in Chianti Classico

Located in the picturesque Chianti Classico region, Podere L’Aja is an agricultural winery surrounded by stunning hills, just 700 meters from the historic village of Radda. This charming winery is nestled among vineyards, olive groves, and orchards, creating a quaint village atmosphere that reflects the rich heritage of Tuscany.

Two Brothers' Vision for Quality Wine

In 1979, Milanese brothers Angelo and Ugo Contrino fell in love with the beauty of Chianti Classico and took on the challenge of revitalizing Podere L’Aja. Initially, the winery consisted of basic structures and vineyards. Over the years, they transformed it into a modern facility equipped with advanced technology while maintaining its traditional roots. Today, their cousins Marco and Roberta Contrino, along with local partners, manage the winery's operations, allowing the brothers to balance their engineering and architecture firm in Milan.

Crafting 70,000 Bottles of Organic Wine Annually

Podere L’Aja spans twelve hectares of vineyards, primarily planted with high-quality Sangiovese grapes. Under the guidance of Valerio Marconi, along with Natale Grossi and Federico Staderini, the team meticulously handpicks grapes, ensuring only the finest bunches are selected for fermentation. The winery features two cellars: a modern one for initial winemaking and a traditional cellar for aging and bottling. The Contrino family uses Slavonian oak barrels and French barriques for maturation, producing around 70,000 bottles of organic wine each year, showcasing the unique terroir of Tuscany.

Beautiful tour of vineyards and cellars and with tasting at the gates of Radda in Chianti. Valerio passed on to us all his passion for the craft, explaining in detail and in a simple way the process of winemaking and answering all our questions/curiosities. The wines tasted were all excellent and much appreciated, as was the accompanying plate of local products. A small reality that deserves to be discovered during a visit to Chianti.
