Limited Run of High End Wines
Poggio Cagnano’s adventure began in 2005 when the owners started a 10-year long task to restore the old olive groves, build the winery and plant their vineyards in the Maremma area with a rich potential for winemaking. The company’s harvest was in 2014, and currently, they are known for making limited high-quality organic Maremma Toscana DOC wines. They aim to plant more vines and enhance their winemaking to produce around 25,000 bottles of wines each year in the future.
Mountain Climate of Maremma Area
Poggio Cagnano has a stunning view from the Monte Amiata to the Argentario Sea. The company has 2 hectares of vineyards on an Arenaria block surrounded by oak forests and olive groves. The soil here is well-drained with a high minerality. The mountain climate here has temperature variations that are ideal for growing grapes. The grapes get a thick skin that increases the amount of tannins, increasing the intensity and ageing capacity of the wines. Mainly, Ciliegiolo, Sangiovese, Ansonica, and Vermentino grapes grow here. Some international varietals like Merlot, Cabernet, and Grenache can be found too.
Efforts to Conserve the Soil and Biodiversity
In 2015, the winery started with organic conversion, and there is no use of chemicals in the vineyards or in the cellar. The use of organic, sustainable techniques helps to preserve the biodiversity and the health of their vines. The cellar uses modern technology and machinery, and the wines are aged in oak barrels to attain the required taste and structure. Their famous three red wines include the Rose, Vermentino, and the Maremma Toscana DOC.
