Established in 2007 in Northern Umbria, Poggio Maiolo is run by sisters Alessia and Valeria who choose to plant no local vines. Organically driven from the very beginning, they've always worked in the most sustainable way; no herbicides nor bug killers are admitted. Overlooking Poggio Maiolo's vineyards is Montone, one of Italy's most beautiful medieval towns, and ancient fortress of Braccio Forte Braccio, the warlord that, in the fifteenth century, was close to constituting a State of Central Italy. Poggio Maiolo spreads over 40 hectars in a transition zone, between the High Tiber valley and the Umbrian-Marche Apennines. Most of these 40 hectars are woodland where truffles grow and deers, wild boars and other wildlife live. Other that woods, in the years olive orchards and two truffle grounds were implantend along with the 6 hectars of vineyards. Almost all operations in the vineyards are carried out manually by Valeria and Shaban, and also grapes and olives are only picked and selected by hand. The wines are produced in limited quantities, and they truly reflect the terroir were they come from.

Splendid place, really good wines made with passion! Complete tastings of really good local products, it's a shame not to have also booked the truffle hunt...

Super fun wine tasting! Valeria is very pleasant and talks passionately about the vineyard. Poggio Maiolo grows grapes that you won't immediately find in Umbria, so go here if you want something different from the standard and want to have a nice afternoon.

We had such a lovely tasting at Poggio Maiolo! Valeria went above and beyond to make sure we had the most memorable experience. Poggio Maiolo is a very special organic winery and the wines were delicious! We would highly recommend for others to visit!

We visited Valeria and were absolutely stunned by her passion, knowledge and dedication to her craft. The wines we tasted were sublime and highlighted the skills of a brilliant wine maker. Poggio Maiolo maybe small, but they produce spectacular wines with big flavour. Thank you, thank you, thank you

I contacted Valeria at Poggio Maiolo to set up a wine-tasting when my family are in Umbria in late July. Unfortunately, she will be away then so wasn't able to do it, but I'm leaving this 5* review because she could not have been kinder and more helpful in her responses to me. She ended up sending me contact details for 5 other wineries we could try! I am blown away by how kind she has been and can only assume that doing a wine-tasting with her would be a wonderful experience. I'm very much hoping that I'll be able to do that when I'm back in Umbria next year! Mille grazie, Valeria
