Quinta de Covela, Boutique Winery Flaunting an Old Villa with Rich History
Quinta de Covela is a boutique winery, located in the Vinho Verde región of Portugal. The winery cultivates its vineyards organically, taking great care of their vines, grapes, and wine production. Situated within an old villa rich in history, discover breathtaking views of the surrounding unspoiled beauty. Guests are always welcomed to taste wines and discover the ruins of the manor house, dating back to the 16th century.
Brazilian Marcelo Lima and Briton Tony Smith together started three dynamic projects in recent years, and Quinta de Covela is among them. Within three years, the Lima-Smith partnership took over Covela, and they became award-winning viticulturists in 2011. Next, they expanded their winery by purchasing land in Boavista, in the Douro region, followed by stretching their arms with the long-term lease of Tecedeiras.
The winemaking duo expresses an inherent potential for internationalization, which can be seen in their world-class wines, renowned worldwide.
Vast Range of Grapes and Blending
Today, Lima and Smith own 80 hectares of farmland, out of which 40 hectares are dedicated to old vineyards. The winery houses a vast range of grapes, including Avesso, Arinto, Touriga Nacional, Chardonnay, Viognier, and Gewurztraminer. After manual harvesting, the berries are moved to the cellar for fermentation under controlled temperature conditions.
The wine cellar at Quinta de Covela Winery consists of advanced presses and stainless steel tanks, outfitted with cooling devices. For storing and refining the red and Port wines, the owners use wooden barrels made from French and American oak. The estate has accommodation facilities for guests as well—four suites equipped with modern amenities are available to you on your next visit.
