Quinta de Covela, a Boutique Winery Planted around an Old Manor House Rich in History
Quinta de Covela is a boutique winery, located on the Douro river in the southern reaches of the Vinho Verde region of Portugal. The winery cultivates its vineyards organically, taking meticulous care of their vines, grapes, and wine production. You can visit the vineyards built around the ruins of the 16th Century Manor House, enjoy the breathtaking views of the surrounding unspoiled beauty and taste the fresh, gastronomic wines from that estate that is steeped in history.
Brazilian Marcelo Lima and Briton Tony Smith together started their partnership a decade ago at Quinta de Covela. Today, the partners, with renowned winemaker Rui Cunha, make wines at three different locations along the Douro Valley- Covela, Tormes, and Tecedaires. Their dynamic approach and eye for detail have won them the prestigious Viticulture and Prodcuer of the year awards in Portgual.
The winemaking duo expresses an inherent potential for internationalization, which can be seen in their world-class wines, renowned worldwide.
Vast Range of Grapes and Blending
Today, Lima and Smith farm 65 hectares of farmland in both Vinho Verde and Douro Demarcated regions. At Covela, you can taste wines from all the portfolio, including modern, mono-varietal wines made from native grapes such as Avesso, Arinto, Touriga Nacional, but also blends that mix in Chardonnay, Viognier, and Gewurztraminer, plus heartier Douro reds and Ports, made from grapes from older vines. At all our locations, we use manual harvesting and – in the case of red wines and Port – the most traditional winemaking methods, such as foot-treading in granite vats or upturned barrels. The berries are moved to the cellar for fermentation under controlled temperature conditions.
The wine cellar at Quinta de Covela Winery is equipped with modern presses and stainless steel tanks, fitted with a precise cooling system. For storing and refining the red and Port wines, the owners use wooden barrels made from French and American oak. The estate has accommodation facilities for guests as well—four suites equipped with modern amenities are available to you on your next visit.
