Quinta de Santiago – A Boutique Winery in Scenic Surroundings

Located in the breathtaking landscapes of Monção and Melgaço, Quinta de Santiago is a charming boutique winery in Portugal's Vinho Verde region. Nestled by the Minho River Valley and surrounded by rolling mountains, this winery specializes in the Alvarinho grape, a native white variety. Quinta de Santiago produces exceptional white, rosé, and sparkling wines. Visitors can enjoy the picturesque views from the manor house, which overlooks the historic granary and the iconic Chapel of Sir S. João Batista.

A Family Legacy of Winemaking

Quinta de Santiago has been a family-owned winery since 1899, now run by the fourth generation of the Santiago family. For over a century, the family has cultivated grapes, olives, and other produce for personal use. In 2009, Mariazinha and her children transformed the estate into a boutique winery, honoring their ancestors' traditions. The first vintage was released in 2014 after two years of careful aging. Today, three generations of the Santiago family work together, blending time-honored practices with modern winemaking techniques.

Viticulture and Winemaking Practices

Set in the heart of the Vinho Verde sub-region, Quinta de Santiago's vineyards span 7.5 hectares, primarily focusing on the Alvarinho grape. The vines thrive in a unique microclimate, stretching from the Minho River valley to the surrounding mountains. Joana Santiago, the current owner and winemaker, collaborates with family members to produce aromatic wines while respecting traditional methods and maintaining ecological balance. Most vineyard work is done manually, ensuring high-quality grapes and a sustainable approach to winemaking.

We had a fabulous visit to the winery. Joana gave us an excellent tour of her vineyard and winery. The wines are superb. Joana and her mother served us a wonderful lunch to complete a great day. It was an easy drive from Tui/Valenca and I would recommend a visit to anyone in the area.

Incredible hospitality! What was surely an inconvenience for them in the slow season, we messaged that we were arriving an hour and a half early for our scheduled tour and tasting only 30 minutes in advance of our arrival. You would never know that we probably inconvenienced our hosts as we were greeted enthusiastically and warmly by the estate's matriarch, the enchanting Arcelina, and her two friendly dogs. Arcelina welcomed us, toured the estate with us all the while weaving the family history of the estate, the vineyard practices and the current winemaking methods employed. It was an unforgettable experience, unlike any other winery visit we've experienced, it was personal and informative yet relaxed and informal, much like sharing wine with friends. We cannot thank Quinta de Santiago enough for being overly accommodating and kind. It was truly an honor to spend the early afternoon at the estate and in the company of Arcleina.

We went to a very pleasant wine tasting, almost with a family atmosphere, where we were told a little about the history of the farm and its wine production. We found the wines to be of good quality and at a good price.
