João Clara is a project that was born in the 70s in Alcantarilha, Algarve and has had 3 generations since then.

João Maria Alves is the name of its pioneer, but it was for João Clara that he was always known and that ended up also giving the name to Quinta.

2006 Joaquim João, son of João Clara, second generation and the visionary showed the country and the world a new Algarve with the first bottles of red wine with the oenological support of António Maçanita.

Today, in the third generation, daughters, wife  and many more bottles of wine follow their dreams, and success has come to fruition year after year.

They kept the grape varieties already chosen, such as Syrah, Touriga nacional, Trincadeira and Alicante bouschet, as well as their “Garden” as Joaquim called it, an old Negra Mole vineyard.

Among the many papers and writings left by Joaquim João was in his idea planting white grape vineyards and a winery, these were the wishes that Ana, Joana and Edite Alves fulfilled and continue to fulfill.

At this moment, Quinta João Clara, has a total of 26 hectares of vineyards with different soil areas ranging from red clays, sands and limestone clay soils, leaving monovarietals such as Alvarinho, Syrah and Negra Mole, as well as reserves on the Enology of Joana Maçanita, the oenologist who made all dreams turn into wine.

The success of the project and wines is real, because the women behind it do not give up on their ideals continue to believe what Joaquim João had envisioned.

Fantastic experience. The wine is of high quality. It's always worth visiting that produces both wine and is valued as local castes, as is the case, a black mole.

A lovely, boutique winery that has a true passion for wine making. The staff here were excellent, and I was able to meet the wine maker herself. This winery is 100% women owned and operated. The João Clara wines are outstanding. They all have excellent notes and you get a true sense of the art of wine making at this winery. There is no fluff - they let their wines stand on their own, which I appreciated. One of the highlights is their barrel room where they have 150 year old terracotta vats that are used to age some of their wines. It is an ancient method and it produces a wine that has outrageously good earth tones to it. Spend the extra Euros and buy a bottle. It is amazing. I encourage doing a tasting to get taste of the scope of their wines. I’m a particular fan of their Rosé, but their reds and Reserva is also outstanding.

We hadn't booked and didn't have much time, but we were given a private, simple tasting and a tour of the urns, barrels, and casks in which the various wines were stored, either wholly or partially. The package allowed us to buy three wines: white, rosé, and red, all of which are great for home storage. A real treat!

Today we visited Quinta João Clara! There couldn't be a better experience! We recommend you call or send an email in advance to make a reservation for a tasting, because Edith takes all her time to make your experience filled with quality time and quality wine! We enjoyed all the flavors so much and were listening to every word Edith had to say. Tremendous knowledge, love and passion. We will definitely recommend the wines and visit to anyone! Very happy!

Small family winery. Friendly welcome, pleasant atmosphere. The wine made from Negra Mole is especially noteworthy.
