The Birthplace of Sparkling Wine and the Lord Sieur d’Arques

The Languedoc wine region boasts a rich history that dates back to the 5th century BC with the arrival of the Greeks. However, it was in 1531 that Benedictine monks from the Abbey of Saint Hilaire, near Limoux, created the world’s first sparkling wine. The local nobleman, the Sieur d’Arques, was known for his fondness for this sparkling wine, often celebrating his victories with flasks of Blanquette. Inspired by this legacy, local vintners named their winery Sieur d’Arques, honoring the region's historical significance. The AOC Blanquette de Limoux is recognized as the first AOC in Languedoc and one of the earliest appellations in France.
