Exceptional Wines from Limoux
Sieur d’Arques is located in Limoux, 25 km south of Carcassonne. It has been producing exceptional wines since 1946. It has made a name for itself in the Languedoc region. For instance, as a creator of wines which artfully marry tradition with technical know-how.
The World’s First Sparkling Wine and the Lord Sieur d’Arques
The history of the Languedoc wine region dates back to the 5th century BC with the Greeks. However, it was in 1531 when the Benedictine monks from the Abbey of Saint Hilaire, a town near Limoux, produced the World’s First Sparkling Wine on the local winery. The Lord of the region, the Sieur d’Arques, was a great lover of this sparkling wine and liked to knock back “flasks” of Blanquette to celebrate his victories. Four centuries later, with this historical anecdote in mind, the local wine growers decided to rename their winery, Sieur d’Arques. The AOC Blanquette de Limoux is the first AOC in the Languedoc and one of the first appellations in France.
A Pioneer in Pyrenean Vineyards
Located in the Pyrenean foothills, at the crossroads of Atlantic and Mediterranean climate influences, the Limoux wine region is one of great richness and diversity. The 204 Sieur d’Arques winemakers and wine growers have understood this and came to work on local wineries. Pioneers in the identification and selection of the finest vineyard plots, they have been taking a qualitative and innovative approach for over thirty years. Sieur d’Arques uses the diversity of their 1,804 hectares of vineyards to create exceptional wines. In 2007, Sieur d’Arques joined an ambitious collective initiative designed to meet the needs of sustainable development and it now is known as Wine growers for sustainable development. Since then, Sieur d’Arques winery has taken account of this philosophy in all its major business decisions.
