Smallfry Winery: A Passionate Partnership

Smallfry Wines is a unique collaboration between Suzi Hilder and Wayne Ahrens, a couple dedicated to the art of winemaking. Both experienced viticulturists, they cultivate their own grapes and transform them into exquisite wines. Their commitment to natural fermentation, minimal intervention, and the use of old oak barrels results in wines that truly reflect their terroir.

Barossa Certified Excellence

At Smallfry, great wines begin with exceptional fruit. The winery sources grapes from two remarkable vineyards: one in Eden Valley, established in 1994, and another in Vine Vale. Both locations contribute to the winery's Barossa certification, ensuring high-quality production. The estate grows a diverse range of grape varieties, including Grenache, Shiraz, Mourvèdre, Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling, Semillon, Cinsault, Bon Vedro, Trousseau, Roussanne, Marsanne, Pedro Ximenes, Tempranillo, Graciano, and Tinta Amarela.

Smallfry Wines offers a variety of styles, including red, white, rosé, sparkling, dessert, and fortified wines.

Biodynamic Winemaking Practices

Smallfry Wines is proudly certified as Australian Certified Organic, reflecting its commitment to biodynamic practices. The winery distinguishes itself by using wild yeast for primary fermentation, a method that enhances the wines' unique and fruity flavor profiles. While this process may take longer, it results in wines that are rich in character and authenticity.

Smallfry was absolutely fantastic and a can’t miss experience in the Barossa if you’re interested in seeing the smaller wineries. Wayne kindly invited us to the vineyard for the tasting rather than the cellar door. Stellar wines and experience all around. Wayne is extremely knowledgeable and a brilliant bloke.

Took a small group here for the biodynamic vineyard tour. Wayne was a charming guy, very knowledgeable and provided so much info (great for nerds & aficionados alike.) Started off tasting the ferments (definitely go during vintage for this element) then tasted grapes and then saw the rest of the biodynamic processes being utilised. A place you *must* book ahead to see and allow an hour and a half to get the full experience. So caught up in our tour we had to remind him we wanted to buy things too! This is a passionate family business so Wayne knows every little element and loves showing guests his life’s work. “farm trinkets” abound, this is an all access winery tour where you will definitely not regret attending. Bring sensible shoes!

This is a lovely little place for some great organic wine tasting. A friend is a fan for natural wine so we ended up here. The owner is super friendly, and knowledgeable. He told us a lot about how the organic wine works and also about his winery experience. The little tasting room is adapted from a previous bank room : very fun when we see a vault of wine 😊 The wines are also very yummy. They have a variety of tastes from fruity to oaky etc. In brief this is a very nice place to visit if you have a small group and would like to try some natural/organic wine.

Really amazing wines. Was taken here by a local guide on a private wine tour a few years ago - he built it up as the best value small producer around. Didn't disappoint. Definitely one of my favourite wine tasting experiences. Have been buying their wines since then and absolutely love them. I don't usually write reviews online, but saw that only a few people had left reviews (and there were two negative ones dragging down the score - one from someone who gave it 3 stars because it was closed...??? and the other I'm guessing must have been an accidental 1 star, as there was no text and I'm not sure how you could rate anything involving these wines a 1 star). Anyway, for me the experience and the wines were just about as good as it gets.
