Tenuta I Collazzi: A Family Legacy

Tenuta I Collazzi is a remarkable winery located on a scenic hilltop just south of Florence, Tuscany. The estate spans 25 hectares of vineyards and is renowned for its commitment to traditional farming practices. The stunning architecture of the winery, originally designed by Michelangelo in 1560, features two rows of loggias surrounding a spacious courtyard. Although the building remained unfinished for centuries, it found new life when the Marchi family acquired it in 1933.

A Vast Estate with Quality Vines

The estate encompasses 960 acres, with 71 acres dedicated to vineyards. The soil, a mix of clay, sand, and rock, provides excellent drainage and is ideal for grape cultivation. Managed by Carlo Marchi, Grazia Marchi Gazzoni Frascara, and Bona Marchi Frescobaldi, the winery released its first vintage under the Collazzi label in 1999. Over the past decade, the Marchi family has invested significantly in modernizing the winery and renewing the vineyards to enhance the quality of their wines.

Exceptional Wines from a Unique Terroir

Tenuta I Collazzi produces exquisite wines from grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Sangiovese. The combination of these varietals and the region's temperate microclimate results in wines that are fruity, complex, and well-balanced. The vineyards are meticulously managed, with over 6,150 plants per hectare, ensuring high-quality grapes. The wines are aged primarily in new French oak barrels, adding depth and character. The estate is known for its Chianti Classico, I Bastioni, and a Super-Tuscan blend called Collazzi.

I was given a bottle for tasting...magnificent work of winemaking...woody, tannic and fruity (it will wonderfully highlight a nice red meat) ..molto buon...arotti!!! If only my Italian friends whom I love so much forgive me this too "easy" play on words!!

The visit to the Collazzi wine cellar was a special experience. Alberto, the winery's experienced oenologist, guided us through the wine production with real passion and shared his extensive knowledge with us. An absolute highlight was the tasting directly from the barrel - especially the Ferro Collazzi 2023. Although the wine is still young, it already showed impressive aromas and was surprisingly enjoyable. Thanks to Alberto's expertise and enthusiasm, we got a deep insight into the art of winemaking. A visit that we will remember for a long time!

Me and and my friend went on a spontaneous trip to their winery. Alberto welcomed us super nicely and took us around and showed us every step on how they are producing their variety of wines. He also answered all of our questions and gave us a lot of background information. After we had a little win tasting and he explained a lot about each wine and gave us everything we needed. He was super nice and also made our way home far more easy as the location is a bit hard to reach/leave. All in all it was absolutely worth it and we had a great time! Thank you Alberto!

Last Saturday morning we visited this winery with some friends. Our guide was personable and knowledgeable, the wine was delicious, and the location was beautiful. Amongst one of my favorite winery tours. If you're looking for a little escape from Florence, I would highly recommend paying a visit.
