Tenuta Poggio Il Castellare: A Historic Winery in Montalcino

Situated atop the lush hills of Montalcino, Tenuta Poggio Il Castellare is one of the region's oldest wineries, with roots dating back to 1489. The Baroncini family began their winemaking journey in this historic area, known since Etruscan times for its rich viticulture. The estate spans 40 hectares, featuring seven hectares dedicated to organic farming, two hectares of truffle fields, and three hectares of woodland filled with medicinal herbs. In 1998, Bruna Baroncini and her nephew Samuele took ownership, continuing a legacy that has flourished for over 500 years.

The estate includes a collection of farmhouses that house the cellars, residences, and welcoming areas for visitors.

Winemaking Philosophy at Tenuta Poggio Il Castellare

At Tenuta Poggio Il Castellare, the focus is on preserving tradition while promoting organic practices and the unique qualities of Montalcino wines. The goal is to enhance the character of Brunello, showcasing the rich fruits and aromas that define this celebrated wine. The estate is dedicated to maintaining the distinctiveness of Sangiovese Grosso and honoring traditional vinification methods. Bruna's dream of crafting Brunello, often referred to as "the king of reds," has become a reality.

Dining at the Tavern in the Cellar

Set against the picturesque backdrop of the Val d’Orcia, the tavern in the cellar of Tenuta Poggio Il Castellare offers a delightful taste of Tuscany's culinary heritage. Guests can enjoy fresh produce from the estate, traditional dishes, and the local specialty, pici pasta. The elegant setting features tables nestled among wooden barrels, creating a unique dining atmosphere. The restaurant also hosts themed dinners, expertly pairing local wines with seasonal dishes.

I attended a truly unforgettable wine tasting. Beautiful location surrounded by nature, welcoming atmosphere, but what made the experience special was the kindness and helpfulness of the guys... Sofia, Giulia, the manager, and Samuele, the owner. Even though we still had two hours to go before the New Year's Eve dinner, each wine was presented to me with passion and competence by Sofia, with detailed explanations of origin and characteristics, making me feel completely at ease. The selection of wines was excellent, as was the quality... an engaging and well-curated experience that I can recommend to all wine lovers! Stephan

This is a truly magical place, close to the attractions of the Val d'Orcia and surrounded by nature with a wonderful view of the surrounding hills and vineyards. In this place you can breathe good air and live in a priceless family environment. The staff makes you feel at home, the rooms have a very warm atmosphere that matches the place where we are. The attention to the customer surprised me positively. Here you are not treated like guests but as part of the family. I would like to add that the kitchen is absolutely worth a try, fresh and quality products, I communicated my lactose intolerance and without asking anything I was given two desserts that I could eat (very good). If we want to find a “fault” at this point it is certainly the dirt road that precedes the arrival at the farm, but absolutely doable and without any particular dangerous sections. If you drive slowly you arrive without any problems. Overall the place is so beautiful that this last aspect was really secondary in my experience.

An intimate establishment in the heart of Tuscany that invites you to relax and rest. The place is quiet and overlooks the village of Montalcino; the view is breathtaking and even more so at sunset; the rooms are well equipped and very comfortable. Special mention to the restaurant where we were able to taste homemade and simply delicious Tuscan specialties, all accompanied by wine produced by the family business! The only drawback is the lack of a swimming pool, which would be a real plus on hot summer days. Many thanks to the whole team for this break from our stay in Italy.

I stayed at Agriturismo Poggio Il Castellare with my mother and my partner. The rooms are comfortable and the view of the Valdorcia hills is breathtaking, but what makes this place really special is the human component: a team of young workers who superbly manage this beautiful structure immersed in Tuscan nature. From before our arrival, Giulia and Sofia immediately proved to be kind and helpful. An honourable mention also for the chef and the restaurant staff: the dinner for my mother's birthday was delicious, as were the wines they produce and truly impeccable service. We felt pampered and for this I would like to sincerely thank Carla, Francesco and all the staff. A splendid stay in a lovely place! Well done guys!

We stayed here for 2 night and we love it! During our stay we went for a wine tasting and visited the restaurant in the hotel. The hotel is really organized and responsive where they will reach out to you through WhatsApp in advance to make sure you have a smooth journey to the hotel. The road to the hotel is a bit rocky, our tire went flat on our way to the hotel (during a 4x4 might be a better option) Hotel staff is really helpful and went an extra mile to help us call the rental car company to get our tire replaced.
