Experience the Charm of Dalmatia's Terra Madre Winery
Winery Overview
Region: Dalmatia
County: Dubrovačko – Neretvanska County
Community: Slivno
Vineyard Size: 16.30 hectares
Terra Madre Winery is nestled in the picturesque village of Komarna, where the unique limestone hills create an ideal environment for viticulture. The vineyard sits at an altitude of 50-180 meters, with slopes reaching up to 45%. Its south-southwest orientation, proximity to the sea, and excellent ventilation promote organic farming practices, minimizing the need for chemical treatments.
The local microclimate boasts over 2,600 hours of sunshine annually, enhanced by the sun's reflection off the sea and limestone surfaces. Visitors can enjoy stunning views of the Pelješac Peninsula and the nearby islands of Hvar and Brač.
Soil and Grape Varieties
The vineyard's soil is a skeletal mix of terra rosa and stone, with a pH of 7.6 and traces of salt from the bura wind. With a planting density of 7,200 grafts per hectare, the limestone retains moisture, reducing disease risk and supporting eco-friendly production. The area receives an average annual rainfall of 700 mm, with the primary grape varieties being Plavac Mali and the indigenous Pošip.
Production Practices
Since 2013, Terra Madre has been committed to organic production, with all harvesting done by hand. The winery features modern technology for vinification and bottling, utilizing both Croatian and French oak barrels, as well as stainless steel tanks. This careful approach ensures the quality and authenticity of their wines.
