Axel Schmitt, Certified Organic Winery Since 1978
Between scenic Sprendlingen and Ober-Hilbesheim, Axel Schmitt Winery is producing exquisite German wines in the region of Rheinhessen. Delivering wines with both power and finesse, the estate became organic in 1978 through the combined efforts of three generations of the Schmitt Family. The winery has a long winemaking history, which continues through the family, generation after generation
The 13th generation of the Axel Schmitt Winery currently manages the wine production at this acclaimed Rheinhessen winery.
The history of viticulture begins in 1672 when the ancestor of the Schmitt Family bought land to cultivate vineyards. Today, the 13th generation governs the wine production processes at Axel Schmitt, under the ownership of Liesel and Berthold Schmitt. Each wine of the estate reflects the true characteristic of the cool climate grapes and the panoramic hillsides in which they grow.
Grapes Varieties and the Winery’s Range of Wines
Preserving their ancestral winemaking methods, Liesel and Berthold Schmitt grow a variety of traditional grapes in the vineyards. This includes Riesling, several different Pinot varieties, Muskateller, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Sauvignon Blanc. The vineyards are cultivated naturally with flowers growing between the vines to enhance the biodiversity of the vineyard. They manually pick the berries to maintain the complexity of their organic wines. Axel Schmitt produces an extensive line of wines, including red, white, and sparkling wines, in combination with dessert, rosé, and fortified wines.
The Stone Arched Cellar and Oak Barrels for Aging
Established in 1865, the vaulted wine cellar consists of two stone arches, reflecting the historic winemaking traditions. It also consists of 50 oak barrels and barriques in total to store wines for aging and refining.
