Located between the picturesque towns of Sprendlingen and Ober-Hilbersheim, Weingut Axel Schmitt has been crafting exceptional German wines in the Rheinhessen region since 1978. This family-run winery, now in its 13th generation, is renowned for producing wines that showcase both strength and elegance. The Schmitt family's winemaking tradition dates back to 1672, when their ancestor first cultivated vineyards in the area. Today, each bottle reflects the unique character of the cool climate grapes and the stunning hillsides where they thrive.

Grape Varieties and Wine Selection

Weingut Axel Schmitt honors traditional winemaking practices by cultivating a diverse range of grape varieties, including Riesling, various Pinot types, Muskateller, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Sauvignon Blanc. The vineyards are naturally maintained, with wildflowers growing between the vines to promote biodiversity. Manual harvesting ensures that the grapes retain their complexity, resulting in a wide selection of organic wines, from red and white to sparkling, dessert, rosé, and fortified wines.

Historic Cellar and Aging Process

The winery features a historic vaulted cellar established in 1865, characterized by its two stone arches that reflect the rich winemaking heritage. Inside, 50 oak barrels and barriques are used for aging and refining the wines, allowing them to develop their full potential.
