Vivi il fascino della Toscana a Terre de' Pepi
The company's vineyards are located in Villa Rioddi, about 1 km from the historic center of Volterra; the total extension is about 3 ha of which 2 are of red berry varieties such as Sangiovese, Montepulciano, Ciliegiolo, Colorino and about 1 ha of white berry variety Vermentino.
The exposure is south-west, on the Volterra side where you can see the sea, the soil is mainly clayey with a massive presence of skeleton (stones).
The first hectare was planted in 2007, after careful study and preparation of the soil by Francesco, so much so as to induce him to prepare his degree thesis in Agricultural Sciences at the University of Pisa on: “Influence of the pre-planting hydraulic-agricultural systems of a vineyard on the fertility of the soil”.
The Management
Regarding the management of the vineyards in the post-planting phase, the adopted line is the one that sees the complete elimination of the synthetic chemical and mineral support for nutrition in favor of crops that improve and regenerate the biological fertility of the soil (mixtures of legumes and grasses), which are annually sown in the rows and then chopped and buried during the flowering phase (green manure technique). This has meant that the company's vineyards have had and still have growth times, entry into production and yields per hectare completely different from conventionally managed vineyards (with the help of fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, etc.). And it is precisely from here that the peculiarity of our product begins.
Our basic idea is to offer the public a product that is not only genuine and an expression of the territory from which it comes, but in which one can perceive the soul, energy and personality of those who produce it, or rather of those who simply “help” the plants and the soil to express themselves as unique and irreproducible living beings of this Universe.
This is our idea of wine that will be most appreciated in the future, as opposed to those types of wines that are technically perfect but devoid of soul and traceability to the territory.
In this endless research the Company refuses to classify its agronomic method as “conventional”, “organic”, “biodynamic” or “natural” and prefers to self-define its agriculture as LIVING AGRICULTURE
