Propezzano abbey lies right in the middle of Teramo province, among the Colline Teramane Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOCG production area. Here, at the northern border of the kingdom of Sicily, where the land is narrowed between the Gran Sasso massif and the Adriatic sea, conquering
fights alternated with remarkable trades.
The original complex around the little church of Santa Maria di Propezzano, since the VIII century, was a shelter for pilgrims and crusaders along the way to embarking for the Holy Land, and become eventually an abbey, while representing a huge power stronghold and a rich farm under
the benedictine monks.
Abbazia di Propezzano; A History
In the early XIX century, during Napoleon's kingdom of Naples, Benedictine order was suppressed and the estate ended among the ownerships of Acquaviva dukes first and de' Sterlich marquises then.
Around 1870 the estate was sold, along with others, to the Savini, a family of scholars and wool merchants from Teramo. Along with surveys and treatises about the language, history, and culture of the region they took care of restoration and preservation of the architectural heritage, including the abbey, while they were running the estate.
In Propezzano was recognized as one of the first terroirs to represent the wine of the Teramo area, long before the DOCG institution. Nowadays the Abbazia di Propezzano estate is under the guidance of Paolo Savini de Strasser and consists of 80 hectares of which 16.5 of vineyards. Opposite of the church's facade, along the old paving road there are vineyards of indigenous varieties of Montepulciano,
Trebbiano, Passerina and Pecorino, as well as 900 historical olive trees of Tortiglione, Cucco and Dritta Pescarese cultivar. Agronomic and technical choices respect the environment and tradition of the area to preserve the balance of the nature around and keep high quality for the yield.
